You no longer need to go to a gas station for that biennial emissions test.
On-road vehicle emissions inspection sites have been deployed across Northern Virginia as part of a new program authorized by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
The program, called RAPIDPASS Virginia, lets drivers meet their emissions inspection requirement during daily driving routines.
“Motorists simply drive through conveniently located on-road testing equipment positioned throughout Northern Virginia to have their vehicle emissions measured,” according to a news release from ETEST Corp., which manages the testing centers.
“Owners of well-maintained, clean-running vehicles will receive notification of a passing emissions inspection via mail, or motorists can go online to www.rapidpass.org and enter their license plate number to check if their vehicle has been processed as clean,” the release said.
Inspection fees can be paid online or through the mail.
ETEST has deployed 15 RAPIDPASS on-road emissions systems, which will be moved around 150 mobile inspection sites in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park.
The on-road test can be administered in less than a second and costs the same ($28) as testing at a service station.
Weekly site locations are posted at www.rapidpass.org/VaPublic/Home/Locations.

Away goes even more of the gas service station's profits down the drain.
Technology-wise one ought to be able to plug an OBD II sensor into their instruments panel port that is Bluetooth linked to a smart phone and do the test right in their own driveway.
My opinion this is another way to make it easier on the consumer for Virginia to grab your money, This emissions testing is a money grab from the counties/states, everybody along the 95 corridor has to do this but folks from out a ways do not, even though they use the same highway at some point. I have been in the area for 15 years and i still get annoyed when i think about how the Tax system is setup in this state, Virginia is for Tax Lovers....
yay! no longer have to miss work to have this done, ill take this :)
I used to live in Shelby County, TN outside of Memphis. No inspections and no personal property tax. I had to pay $25 a year to register my vehicle and that was it. [wink]
