The Pied Piper Strikes Again?
Robert, Robert, Robert- It seems that R. Kelly just can’t help himself. Nevermind that it has been proven that the then 27 year old Robert Kelly married a then 16 year old Aaliyah Haughton in 1994; Nevermind the fact that he was indicted on child pornography charges in 2002 after allegedly appearing in a sex video performing lewd acts with a minor; charges of which Kelly still has to answer to in court. Nevermind all of that because it seems that the fans have continued to support Kelly despite the man’s questionable code of ethics. You all must have thought that the Hamburglar mask was a marketing ploy huh?
Well recently George and Regina Daniels claimed that Kelly “crossed the line” with their daughter Maxine Daniels. The story is interesting because Regina Daniels has worked as Kelly’s publicist for the passed fourteen years. That is, of course, until this latest incident occurred. Mind you that Maxine Daniels is twenty-one years of age and therefore legal. The weird part is that due to Mrs. Daniels and Kelly’s long and extensive business relationship, Kelly has known Maxine since she was only seven years old; not to mention that Kells was twenty-seven years old at that time...Yuk!
Mr. Daniels gave an interview to KJLH, a Los Angeles radio station, and stated "He crossed the line with my daughter. It didn't get to the extreme of that [sex tape] video or else I wouldn't be here, if you know what I'm talking about."
Mr. Daniels also told the radio station that he approached Kells about the relationship between the artist and his daughter. To this he said that Kelly “lied to my face.”
Surprisingly, Kelly has responded to these allegations. Representatives for the singer released a statement saying "It's hard to take seriously the moral outrage expressed by George and Regina Daniels over R. Kelly's relationship with Mr. Daniels' adult daughter, Maxine. The fact is that they had no problem with the relationship -- indeed; they encouraged it -- while Ms. Daniels was on Mr. Kelly's payroll. It was only after Ms. Daniels resigned her position to avoid being fired for incompetence that her stepdaughter's relationship suddenly became an issue for her and her husband."
Ouch- looks like the new publicist is taking some hard shots at his or hers predecessor. Furthermore, the claim that he has known this child since she was seven years old was not refuted.
However, in the other corner we have Maxine Daniels herself who told the Chicago Sun Times that Kelly’s version of events is not the case.
Maxine stated "I take full responsibility for my actions. My stepmother and father didn't know about my relationship with the singer because I knew and he knew that they wouldn't approve ... so I tried to keep it a secret, but when my stepmother found out about our relationship, she resigned because she felt that Rob had 'crossed the line' by dating a girl that he has known since she was seven years old. My step mom was not fired for incompetence. She was Rob's publicist for 14 years and always considered Rob not just a client ... but family. And Rob thought of my dad like a father."
She continued by saying "I am 21, smart and will be graduating from college this year, but I admit that I was swept up by his charming and generous ways, which I truly regret and have learned from. My brief relationship with Kelly last year ended because my parents were starting to hear rumors that we were together, and I was beginning to feel like it wasn't a healthy situation, especially with the pain it was causing me and my family. I felt that it just wasn't right…The Internet has been rampant with all sorts of rumors for months now and hopefully this will clear things up. I admit I made a mistake and I know I am not the first young adult to make a serious misjudgment."
This one is a tough call, Maxine seems believable and Kells history is understandably shady. Yet, in this instance, Kelly has broken no laws. However, it does seem that he did indeed cross a line that shouldn’t have been crossed. Ya Heard’s Verdict: Mr. Kelly is guilty of continuously finding himself in compromising situations that involve young women. Come on, grow up Kells!
Eminem Pens Lyrics of a Different Sort
Ian Preece of Orion Publishing Group has announced that his company has partnered with Eminem to release the rapper’s autobiography ‘The Way I Am’ later this year. Eminem will write the introduction to the book as well as provide handwritten lyrics, previously unreleased photographs, and sketches to be included in the book.
Preece stated "Because of where he is from, people think they know where he is at, what kind of person he really is. This book cuts through all that and gets to the source. It has an edge. It'll be one of the books of the year."
I, personally, am looking forward to something new from Eminem. His career up to this point has been one of extreme highs and extreme lows. He has been virtually absent from the public eye since his long time best friend and artist Proof was gunned down in a Detroit nightclub back in 2006. Hopefully this book will give him a place to release some of the pain that may be wearing on him emotionally.
‘The Way I Am’ is scheduled to be released on October 16th of this year.
West Goes Coast to Coast
Backpackers Unite! Kanye West has announced that he will be going on a national tour this spring. Kanye’s ‘Glow in the Dark’ Tour is scheduled to hit the Nissan Pavilion on May 10th; however there was no word on when tickets would begin to be sold as of press time. Although it is still too early to confirm, it has been reported that Kanye will bringing Lupe Fiasco, Pharrell Williams, and the Grammy Award winning Rhianna on the road with him.
Other notable east coast stops for the tour include Virginia Beach on May 11th and New York City on May 13th.
For those of you wondering, the ‘Heart of the City’ Tour featuring Jay Z and Mary J. Blige at the Verizon Center on April 6th is officially ‘sold out’. If you have not received tickets as of yet, your best bet is to tune into local radio stations for ‘Heart of the City’ ticket giveaways…until next week, peace!
