FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) _ University of Mary Washington officials locked down a portion of the school after a man armed with a gun tried to assault a female jogger at a running track.

Fredericksburg Police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe says the woman reported being restrained by the man at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday. She struggled and the man dropped his gun, then picked it up and ran toward Alum Spring Park.

An alert issued by the university at 8:46 a.m. indicated that the area around the athletic complex on Hanover Street was under a lockdown. The lockdown was lifted at 9:40 a.m.

The suspect is described as being a clean-shaven white man, about 6-feet-2 and weighing about 250 pounds. He was wearing black shorts and a white T-shirt.
