A Maryland man has been charged with reckless driving in connection with a crash that injured three and caused substantial delays on Interstate 95 early Friday morning.
The crash happened around 4:30 a.m., just before the Prince William Parkway on northbound I-95, Virginia State Police said.
The driver of a 2004 Chevrolet Corvette fell asleep at the wheel and clipped a 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara in front of him, police said.
The SUV ran off the left side of the road, overturned and landed on the guardrail, said Trooper A.B. Absher. The Corvette ran off the right side of the road.
Both vehicles were driving in the center lane when the crash happened, Absher said.
The driver of the SUV, a 45-year-old woman from East Taunton, Mass., was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital and is expected to survive.
Her 14-year-old daughter and 19-year-old niece were transported to Potomac Hospital. Their conditions were not known, Absher said.
Police said the three were on their way back from vacationing in Florida.
Levi Vaughn, 42, of Clinton, Md., was charged with reckless driving and was released on a summons, police said.
Northbound lanes were shut down for about 45 minutes while police cleared the scene, Absher said.
HOV lanes were closed temporarily and the left lane stayed closed while rescue workers prepared for the woman to be flown out from the scene, Absher said.
