The director of Assisi’s Animal Rescue Foundation near Manassas Park surrendered more than 100 dogs and cats to the county on Monday following a police search of the house the rescue operated from, said 1st Sgt. Kim Chinn, Prince William police spokeswoman.

No charges have been brought against Sandra Cortes, the 48-year-old operator of the rescue, Chinn said, adding that the investigation continues.

During the search, authorities exhumed animals that are being submitted to the state lab for testing, Chinn said.

The police department’s animal control bureau had an ongoing investigation into the rescue and was able to obtain search warrants for the residence at 7605 Old Centreville Road after someone who adopted a puppy from Assisi’s filed a complaint, police said.

The animals, many of which are puppies and kittens, are now undergoing medical evaluation and behavioral screening, according to Chinn.

“The animals have varying degrees of illnesses,” she said.

“Caretakers have to bathe all these animals and that is a huge job,” Chinn added. “Evidently, they were all filthy.”

Chinn said it would be several days before they are in the position to begin adopting the animals out.

I too have adopted a dog from this rescue. I have to tell you my dog is absolutely fabulous. However I almost felt guilty adopting from them because the rescue seemed to be poorly managed, and the more people adopt from places like that the more it encourages them to continue. I felt I was rescuing her from the rescue.  We had fallen so much in love with her we couldn’t leave her there. There were things I saw there such as a broken glass on the ground and the dogs could have either eaten it or stepped on it. Dog fights were breaking out when I was there and the rescue “volunteers” were either slow to respond or hit a stick on the ground near the dogs. A lot of the dogs did seem to be under weight, mine as well. I never received proof of a heart worm test being done, so we got that taken care of ourselves and thank goodness it was negative. On pet finder The dog I adopted was listed as being altered, but was not, and there were many false statements about when the dog would be altered. We took her to the vet for that ourselves. The vet was finally able to get a hold of Sandra a few days later who did agree to pay for part of the altering. There were many things that rubbed me the wrong way about the rescue. I did make an anonymous call to PW County because I was afraid the rescue found out who called they would find some way to take my dog away. Their contract is fairly intense. I was also in contact with the ASPCA who had been following the case until the rescue moved out of FFX county and out of their jurisdiction.
I really feel that this rescue had good intentions of rescuing dogs from being put down, however the execution was not done well at all. And I do believe profit may have been a goal for some, not all of the people involved.
The important thing now is that the dogs do get the care, and loving attention they deserve.  I’m sure PW county animal shelter could probably use some help if nothing else a donation. I agree with befair everyone needs to step in and help out, sitting here typing away is doing nothing but contributing to our anger and frustration with the situation. If nothing else send a donation check to the animal shelter. In the memo put for Assisi’s Rescue dogs. I’m sure they need the support right now, for food and medication for these dogs. Sandra, if you are reading this, this means you as well, if you care about these dogs as much as you claim to send a big old check to PW county animal shelter to help care for them! Anyone involved with other rescues see if you can take on a few more dogs to help get these dogs out of the shelter. I don’t know what the shelter needs for help, these are just my ideas. Does anyone know what we can do to help. I tried e-mailing the shelter to see what I could do to help, but I haven’t received a response yet.
These dogs were taken out of shelters so they were not euthanized it‘s the least we can all do to help give them more time. By the way is it just my imagination or does the Assisi’s web site have new dogs listed?

If Prince William County Animal Control
stepped in and took over, I’m more than positive that there were violations. Not only do you have to feed them correctly, but you have to keep them in a safe and clean environment. As well as keep them healthy which means that they should be free of parasites before they are sold. And don’t forget would you like to sit around uncleaned (unbathed) day after day!

I don’t think any of those who are so opinionated saw a shelter where these animals came from like I have or know what “deathrow” means. Instead of complaining volunteer to help.

Ok PawPrints as you may say you are not Sandra Cortes. Then I guess you may know her very well. Anyways Yes the animals were on channel 7 which i saw, and indeed they looked pretty healthy! am i right? Well could it be because they were being SHELTERED or could it be the were being FED by PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER? Certainly not by Sandra Cortes. These animals were NEGLECTED by Sandra, and as (Calisto) had stated she is correct animals are only supposed to be fed 2xs a day. So if Sandra was really a (Rescuer of animals) Then she should know everything UP and Down about animals. Which we see she does NOT.

Pawprints or Sandra?
We adopted CiCi from Assisi’s Rescue and that is who the check was made out to. Additionally, I have all her records and proof that she was on heartworm prevention the entire time we had her. Thirdly, she had only one adult heartworm that was confirmed by the cardiologist from the ultrasound. In fact, the cardiologist told us the presence of only one adult heartworm was most likely due to the fact that we had her on the preventative.
Per the heartworm society’s website: (http://www.heartwormsociety.org/article.asp?id=11).
“The male heartworms (four to six inches in length) and the females (10-12 inches) become fully grown about one year after infection...”
We had her less than a year when her symptoms started.

Actually, Sandra, per your email back to me: “Second, the heartworm microphilla in the blood stream would have been killed off by the heartworm medication.  Therefore the illness would not have continue to progress.”

I completely agree with that statement. So obviously, she was infected with an adult heartworm when you adopted her to us as she was on the preventative and no other worm was detected.

In my email to you I asked you to furnish the results of the test you told me you did on all adult dogs as your website clearly states as well:

“Your adoption fee pays for the following items:
- all shots ...
- worming
-heartworm test for adult dogs (CC was at least 9 years of age and clearly an adult dog)

So clearly you are falsely advertising what the adoption fee is used for if you did not have her tested for heartworm. As you refused to answer my question in the email you were referring to, I can only assume that you know that this was a slip up on your part as the director of this foundation. A wonderful dog was lost because you couldn’t be honest with us when we came to adopt her and asked you what vaccines she had been given and whether her heartworm test was negative.

ShutdownAssisi you are a liar.  If you had been there as you state you would have know about all the evening events.  The ACO took dogs out for over 3 hours.  You should know this.  When Sandra crossed the street she told reporters the dogs were fed 3 times a day.  You have and axe to gind with Sandra and it shows in what you say.  Even the name you are using so no onw will know who you are tells the story.  Did you watch while people threw rocks at Police?  Or is that a fabrication?

AnimalSavior, it looks like pawprints is Sandra Cortes herself. Look at how she forms sentences (looking at the picture I’ll bet English is her second language) and tries numerous times to defend her “rescue” operation.

Gosh, if this is rescue what is cruelty called?

I don’t know on what planet pawprints lives, but if the animal control withdraws a license - that is serious business. On another note, I think that the animal control was very gracious of either giving up the animals or being sued.

Usually, and I know this for a fact, the ASPCA (featured many times on TV on the Animal Planet channel) only does this to animal collectors. These are people that are mentally disturbed - but in this case they had a heart.

I certainly have not. This “lady” should be jailed! She created a “rescue” league to get money out of the deal. Nothing else. It is a shame that even her website is still up - which should tell you she will do this again and again in order to receive money for these poor creatures and so that she herself doesn’t need to work. Shame on you, Cortes!

The excuses that the animal were fed 3 X a day - every person who knows about cats and dogs is aware that they should only be fed twice a day and I certainly know - I worked for a veterinarian.

And that the animal control doesn’t let you touch the dogs is obvious, don’t you think? These animal didn’t loose weight just because the officers stepped onto your property, lady! And they certainly didn’t turn sick at the sight of them.

Gosh, put her a$$ in jail and throw away the keys!!!!!!!!!
