Why we lost the 2008 election
The post 2008 election debate that should now be engaged should be among us — so-called right-wing members of our society — addressing our loss to the left with the election of Obama to the presidency.
Bush, Cheney violated trust
It’s pretty obvious to me that President George W. Bush, with vice president Dick Cheney’s support, violated his solemn trust as a leader above reproach according to his Constitutional mandate, especially regarding declaring war on Iraq.
Tax relief for the deserving
This is in response to Keith Kessler’s letter in Saturday’s paper asked for an answer to his one simple question (which was actually a statement).
GOP has nobody to blame but itself
I can’t believe, (well yes I can) the audacity of the writer who spoke of the Obama supporters who’ve been had.

Where are all of the people?
The “VIEW FROM ABOVE” photo in a recent News & Messenger must not have been taken during the Obama rally because I can’t find the people.
Claim of support not credible
I’m sure that I am not the only one who was deeply touched by Don Scott’s letter of Nov. 12, in which he professed, “I will actually want my new president to succeed.”
Support local merchants
Where will you shop for the holidays this year? I’ve been one of those people who avoid stores like the plague during the holidays.

We must rally around Obama
Earlier this week, I wrote a letter to the editor with my thoughts as to why the Republicans lost the election in Prince William County, Virginia and across the nation. I believe they lost because of STRIDENT MEANNESS.
Conspiracy and Barack Obama
It does not take much for skeptical Arabs and Muslims to construct conspiracy theories about how America and the West are plotting against them.
Fall Wildlife Festival success
More than 700 residents of Prince William and surrounding counties converged on Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Oct. 11 for the fifth annual Fall Wildlife Festival.

Being made a victim twice
An article in the Nov. 6 edition of the News & Messenger announced the sentencing of a Frederick, Maryland police officer, who had been convicted of public intoxication.
It’s not the unions’ fault
In response to Mr. Thomas article “Less Government intervention, not more,” I have the following to say:

If you think I’m illegal, you prove it
I wrote a letter to the Prince William County Real Estate Assessment Division after receiving a letter from them saying I must provide “Proof of Legal Presence” in the United States if I want to continue qualifying for the Tax Relief Program for “Elderly and Disabled Persons.”

Obama supporters have been had
Those of you who voted for Barack Obama snubbed honor, integrity, valor, wisdom, experience, sacrifice and duty to country.
The world watched in awe
Equality in America had a long and sordid history on the road to Obama’s victory. America now faces Robert Frost’s phrase:
Obama was well worth the wait
On the election eve, two friends and I were in the front row at the Manassas Obama rally. After his speech he came down and shook our hands.
Support for taxes to Northern Virginia
My hope is that Gov. Tim Kaine’s, Sen. Toddy Puller’s and Del. Paul Nichols’ overwhelming support of President-elect Obama’s notion of “wealth redistribution” means that upon completion of the 2009 General Assembly session we’ll see their unified support of more of our tax dollars, at the current or reduced rate, coming back to Northern Virginia than ever before.

Newspaper’s bias prevailed on Nov. 4
In one of your earlier editions, the News & Messenger laid out its policy for endorsing candidates for public office. That edition, your editorial staff said that neither Obama or McCain would be endorsed by your paper.
The hope for a better future
The last time I remember this much excitement about a presidential election was when John Kennedy won his election.
Witnessing the voting process
As a poll worker in Manassas, I was able to witness first hand the process of voting from the other side of the table.
Honoring the real historic figures
History is, indeed, a terrible thing to waste, so let us honor the leaders who actually were the forces behind the achievements listed:
Proud American on Veterans Day
I am proud to be an American and a Manassas citizen! Bravo and thank you to the United States Air Force Concert Band & Singing Sergeants for their stirring performance and perfect ending to a day that honors all of our veterans.
Blessing realized on Veterans Day
I took my dad, a Navy veteran, to the Veterans Day Concert presented by the U.S. Air Force Band at Metz School.

The citizen’s role in the economy
If we believe in self-help and don’t believe the government should solve all of our problems — or at least that the government should be the problem-solver of last resort rather than first resort — it follows that we each should be proactively asking ourselves, “What should I do and what part can I play to solve our country’s current economic ills?”
We did not all want Obama’s change
Ok, so the leftist, radical liberal, Barack Obama won! And congratulations Prince William County on your support of another Jimmy Carter, a die-hard socialist who will “spread the wealth” and take from the rich and give to the poor.
Last eight years were no joke
I would like to say that the last eight years have been a joke. But that would mean that they have been funny. They have been anything but funny.

On U.S. wealth and Latin America
You may wonder at how rich we are as a nation while Latin America is underdeveloped. Fundamentally, this is due to the fact that capitalism, which developed in such countries as England and Holland, never spread to Spain and Portugal.
Clearance trouble for Barack Obama?
In my view, prior to Nov. 4, Barack Obama probably could not have acquired a routine confidential security clearance based on his past associations with radicals and domestic terrorists.

Two thoughts on the 2008 election
My wife and I left Prince William County about nine months ago and have found that access to your newspaper online has helped us get our periodic “fix” of news about the county.
Nothing has changed quite yet
It’s easy getting caught up in the euphoria of the Barack Obama moment. Has anything really changed though? A man with mixed heritage and light brown skin who did not descend from slavery was raised by white people outside of the continental United States.
