Nancy West has excellent qualifications for a seat on the Dumfries Town Council. 

This letter is written in response to the Potomac News, op-ed piece of April 12, “Making things worse.”

The Greater Manassas Volunteer Rescue Squad is experiencing a period of transition. 

The abortion issue has been tallied about in the Potomac News by readers submitting their thoughts on the subject. I thought I’d add my own. 

Cliff Adelman, researcher for the Institute for Higher Education Policy, distinguished himself by putting faces to stats. He didn’t just report data. He told the stories behind the numbers.

An article appearing on the front page of the Washington Times (March 30) reads in part, “The splashy April 16th party — in celebration of the Pope turning 81 — is sponsored by the eight former and current U. S.Ambassadors to the Vatican. Several hundred people are invited.”

This is an exciting time for United States’ citizens.There is the possibility of electing our first female for president or a black American or a brave war hero! 

In an April 11 letter to the editor, David Lee attributes the arrest of 41 undocumented residents to the Prince William County resolution. 

Since there have been many new concerns over the way Prince William County has handled the so called immigration crackdown I suggest that the residents push for a new vote on the resolution and not just the people on the board.

Prince William County has many issues when it comes to animal welfare: a county shelter that is overrun with 8,000 animals a year, no low cost spay/neuter options, no humane education in our community and no dog parks for county residents.

The latest partisan screed of Del. L. Scott Lingamfelter, R-Prince William, “Moderate Democrats reveal their liberal agenda” demonstrates that he is very familiar with right-wing clichés, but is oblivious to his own record.

Finally, the first legitimate criticism of Barack Obama. 

I agree with Catherine Maddox and her April 12 letter to the editor. 

Am I the only person who notices the hypocrisy of the “illegal is illegal” anti-immigration crowd? 

One need only read the letters to the editor to see the level of divisiveness the illegal immigration issue has brought to the county.

On Sept. 15, 2007, Robert Briscoe, a caucasian male, murdered Victor Moreno Orosco, a Hispanic male. Mr. Orosco was shot three times — in the chest, back, and arm. On April 2, 2007 Robert Briscoe was convicted of first degree murder.

Our Board of County Supervisors, the Prince William County Police Department and Neighborhood Services deserve special thanks for improving our quality of life, ensuring the safety of the citizens and improving our community.

I am amazed that those who disagree with Mr. Jacobsen would have him silenced; what an undemocratic and officious thought. Mr. Jacobsen has the courage of his convictions and he offers himself as a target for the tirades of those who would silence all but those who agree with their point of view. 

If the Minnieville/Spriggs Road intersection is an example of how our tax dollars are spent, then the Board of County Supervisors needs to look a lot more closely at responsibility and accountability. 

Judging from the Grundys’ letter on April 13, they obviously did not get the message I was trying to convey. 

In the article covering citizen comments about the pending budget crisis for Prince William County, citizen Sharon Pandak was quoted as saying: “It’s only a couple of pizzas each month” in reference to the impact a higher rate would have on most county residents. 

Eight years ago, more than 25,000 local citizens actively involved in saving their hospital from out-of-town, opportunistic health care operators, voted along with thousands of others to keep their hospital under local control.

Recently, I was at the county landfill and I witnessed three separate trucks, all pulling huge “cage” trailers, dumping the contents of entire households. 

Republicans on the local and state level really demagogued the illegal immigration issue in this past election. They raised expectations about what is possible and they made promises they could not keep.

The most mean-spirited and divisive language I have seen regarding the illegal immigration resolution has been in your very own editorials. 

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors made the right decision several months ago, when they unanimously passed “The Rule of Law” resolution. 

Are we going to be honest about race this time?
