First My Condolences to the family,
Second,
Alice04, there is no bike path or sidewalk where this occured. Also for those who believe a bicyclist has the right of way would be wrong. VA State Code 46.2-800 states that “Every person riding a bicycle on a highway shall be subject to the provisions of the Code of Virginia section on motor vehicles and shall have the rights and duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle unless a provision clearly indicates otherwise.“ Motherof6, Maybe, just Maybe she was in shock, she did hit a child. shock set in after Traumatic events, and causes people to do irrational things like sit there. And if my child friend was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, i would not be posting it on a website i would be helping his family get help for him.
It is a very tragic event but people are quick to blame the driver or the kid maybe we should wait for the police to finish thier investigation instead of forming a lynch mob. Maybe we should take this tragedy and be more proactive. Contact your supervisor let them know you want a bike path installed on hoadly and a traffic light installed at that intersection. If you have children you should teach them the laws of the road before you let them ride around with out your supervision. Call the office of the police chief and tell him you want more enforcement along Hoadly. Again i am sorry for the loss but we need to be proactive in getting changes made.

This story is just so sad. I travel that road several times daily, and I’ve seen police investigators working and surveying the accident scene everyday since it happened. Tonight I drove passed, and I saw who I assume were two adult male family members standing on the side of the road, looking down as if they were trying to make sense of it all. I have no doubt that this young boy was well loved. I hope his family can take some comfort from the fact that the PWC Police are working hard to find answers.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this little boy. It’s sad that people are placing blame when all the circumstances are unknown instead of just paying their respects. Honestly people…

I knew him, he was in my homeroom class last year. It really freaked me and my friends out when we heard the news.I wasn’t really close with him, but he was a great guy who people hung out with alot. I know me and many others will miss him terribly.

A friend of mine and her 2 young teen age boys saw the accident happen. The boy was already crossing the road, they saw him clearly, the lady that hit the child was not paying attention to what was going on around her because if she was this child would not be dead right now and my friends son would not be suffering post dramatic stress syndrom right at the moment….this child can not even close his eyes to sleep because he is seeing the whole incident over and over again in his head…the lady didn’t even go and check on the child she hit what does that tell you?my deepest sympathy to the family.

mjamison, you are certainly right, a person walking or riding a bike has the right of way. But they should know better than to step out in front of a car, or to ride a bike in the middle of the road with no regard for what is happening around them. Just as a person driving a car should do. When sitting at a red light and it turns green do you bolt out into the middle of the intersection, or do you pause and look to see that no one is going to run that red light? One can not assume that just because they have the right of way that they should not be alert. Should children/teens be sitting in the middle of the road? (Mind you there are sidewalks available) When a car is coming down the road in plain sight for a great distance? Do you think that child has the right to continue sitting there without even beginning to move till the driver has made a complete stop a matter of feet away from them versus yards as they are coming down the road? Then look at you as if you have done something wrong. I am not saying that this is what happened here or that this young child was doing something wrong. Just merely that as a whole we need to make a group effort to educate both our drivers and our children to be alert and safe. You can not assume that other people are going to do the right thing!

In complete agreement that the people traveling on Hoadly Rd need to slow it down. This tragedy should be a reminder to everyone that just because we have to get on down the road, doesn’t mean we have to speed. Please pay attention to your speed, pedestrians, cyclists, or whatever comes out in the road. This includes all streets and roads. Dale Blvd has the same problem. Putting yourself in this drivers position or the family of the little boy, how would you feel? God bless both families!
