Move over, slow down or get pulled over.
That's the lesson Prince William County police are teaching this and next month during a driver education campaign to make roads safer for emergency personnel.
During April and May the county police, along with Virginia troopers, will start teaching drivers about a new law that went into effect earlier this month.
Drivers are now required to give police, fire and rescue workers on a road extra space if emergency lights are flashing.
That means they must change lanes or slow down to a safe speed for highway
conditions.
Police in Prince William are going to target the areas of Smoketown Road, Spriggs Road, Crestwood Drive and Graduation Drive during their springtime education campaign.
"The primary goal is to
educate the citizens about the new traffic law. However, depending on the circumstances, a traffic summons may be issued," said Officer Erika Hernandez, Prince William police spokeswoman.
Violation of the new law carries a $2,500 fine or up to 12 months in jail, she said.
