DMHMRSAS wants to shorten its name

It’s had a long name for a long time.

So after more than 20 years, the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services wants a snappier autograph, and it’s seeking public input on four choices:

Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services; Department of Behavioral Health and Supportive Services; Department of Behavioral and Supportive Services; and Department of Supportive and Recovery Services.

As of yesterday, 1,042 people from inside the agency and the community have weighed in, according to the department.

Comments about the choices can be sent to Legislation Director Ruth Anne Walker, at , through July 31.

The name change requires approval in the 2009 General Assembly. The associated cost is estimated at $75,000.

Over time, other state agencies have amended their moniker, according to the DMHMRSAS.

“Also, during that time, many, many people, including legislators and advocates, have complained about the department’s name being unwieldy and far too long,” the agency states on its Web site. “Thus, the time for giving this department a new, more current name has arrived.”
