At least two Manassas area schools are drug free.

Prince William police conducted two random drug searches at Stonewall Jackson High School and Parkside Middle School on Monday.

The department said the searches are part of an ongoing effort to see the schools remain a safe place for both students and teachers.

“It is important to send a strong message that drugs in the school will not be tolerated. We hope that these searches will deter people from bringing drugs to school,” said Prince William police Chief Charlie T. Deane.

Police officers who are assigned to regular duty at both schools helped police coordinate the searches.

While I am the first to agree that drugs have no place in any of our schools.

I do not think that police state tactics are the way to insure no drugs are on school grounds.

To those who say the ends justify the means and illegal warrantless searches are great if they stop illegal drugs… I suggest you read OUR Constitutions and see why these types of police activities are against the law.

In this country we have an inalienable right to be private in our persons papers and homes.

To say it is alright to bend/break the Constitution in some matters opens ALL of us up to governmental abuses.

The Founding Fathers were well aware of how governments can and will become tyrannical over time without oversight. This is why we have the bill of rights to defend us against our government.

Middle school kids are not driving to school but they are stashing the drugs in their pants pockets and sometimes in cigs that girls put in their bras. I agree that some are that dumb to keep it in their locker but they are catching on to the dogs not searching the classroom. It is good that they do these school searches however they need to begin searching in the classrooms if they are to really crack down on the drug problem.

yes, some of them are that stupid.  Trust me.  Additionally, middle school kids do not drive nor are they permitted to bring back packs into the classroom.

If the objective is to keep drugs out of the schools, isn’t that objective being met?  No one said the objective was to keep kids from using drugs, just to not have them in school.

High school kids and even middle school kids are not that stupid. Many highschool kids do not even use their lockers at stonewall I know I use to go there. Every keeps their stash in their vehicles or on them and when the dogs would go around everyone knew they were safe because the dogs never checked classrooms. Unless they check classrooms these random searches are just a waste of time and tax payer money.

Hate to break it to everyone but no semi-intelligent high schooler is going to keep drugs in their lockers. That is the only place that the dogs check while the students are locked away in the classrooms with their weed stashed in their backpack. Sorry, but if they really want to crack down on drugs they should find another way because almost no one is dumb enough to keep their stash in their locker.

More power to the police deparment for this!  I am glad that they are doing random drug searches, however I am most happy that they found none!  Schools should be a safe environment where students can get an education. I am sure the random drug searches were not done without approval of the school system. DRUGS and WEAPONS don’t belong in the hands of our children!  Keep up the good work Prince William County.

Kids in high school and middle school shouldn’t have drugs at school.  The running of the dogs sends a strong message to keep that crap out of the school.

Don’t blubber over someone’s rights.  They don’t have the right to disrupt the school and influence other’s children with their drugs.

Warrantless searches are just a part of the fascists i charge (BOCS) since the resolution.  Remember:  the BOCS are overwhelmingly Republic, i.e toads and lackeys of the republican Bush admin, and big McCain-Palin supporters. You home could be next. - Just like the Nazis.

youre an idiot.  Keeping drugs out of the schools decreases the risk to all students of drug use and criminal behavior.  Thos using drugs are more likely to carry guns to school and to go to school intoxicated.  What eklse do you suggest we do?  Do u have any kids in schools?

While Prince William police Chief Charlie T. Deane may think it is important to send a strong message that drugs in the school will not be tolerated, he also needs to know that he sent another message, now proven bt the dearth of illegal drugs:  REGARDLESS OF YOUR INNOCENCE, WE CAN BREACH THE THIN VIEL OF PRIVACY AND CONDUCT A WARRANTLESS (and ultimitly unwarrented) SEARCH, SIMPLY BECAUSE WE CAN.  Oh, I add, it seems like a great use of time and funding.Did we pay overtime for this too?
