It’s hard for the little guy to compete in this day and age with big box stores everywhere.
Alvey's Grocery is no exception.
Today, the Alvey's will give up the store that has been in the family for 133 years.
"It's been a very sad, sad day for us," said Jennifer Alvey, who everyone calls J.J.
Founded in 1875 by Alvey's great-great-great-great grandfather, F.H. Sanders, the store had three locations over the years in the Gainesville area near Catharpin.
WI-NOT Stop bought the most recent store at 4661 Sudley Road and will remain open through the transition, said Carl Hitt who oversees the chain's 11 stores in Northern Virginia.
Alvey, who started bagging groceries in the family store at age 6, said it was hard to sell off the merchandise and see the shelves empty.
"It's time and it has to happen. Times are changing and we accept that," said the 33-year-old Alvey who ran the store with her father, Robert Alvey; mother, Pam Alvey; brother, Wynn Alvey; and sister-in-law, Sara Alvey.
D.T. Smith, who has been shopping at Alvey's for about 10 years, raved about the meats he used to get there and said he too was sad to see the Alvey's relinquish the business.
He said he just liked the store where a hand-lettered blackboard welcoming customers still hung by the cash register.
"It was a neat place to come because you got a sense of community. They knew you. You knew them," he said.
He said Alvey's hot dogs and chicken from the deli were outstanding too.
Hitt said WI-NOT Stop would keep the deli.
The Alvey's donated the last of their stock to the Manassas charity Securing Emergency Resources Through Volunteer Efforts Inc.
"That's it. No more small Mom-and-Pop's. This is the last one," J.J. Alvey said after she helped load the SERVE van.

Without Disney you get housing and development. According to the Sept 29, 1994 Journal Messenger with Disney you get housing - 2281 homes on Disney’s property alone - 1340 hotel rooms and 2 million square feet of commercial space - plus the theme park. Traffic would have been unimaginable on I66. Disney would have put Alvey’s out of business 14 years ago and 234 would be a 4 lane Prince William Parkway. I am glad the Alvey’s rural store kept Wal*Mart at bay all these years though.

If memory serves me correctly, the developers of the Alvey Mall used the good name of the Alvey family and their commitment to occupying space in the new shopping center to get BOCS approval. This was all based on how “unsafe” the old store was to the area traffic pattern. So what did the Alvey’s do? Simply rent out the old store which continued the unsafe traffic pattern while adding new traffic to an existing quagmire. Yes the Alvey’s are wonderful people and have done many good things for the community, but that mall was right from the Slick Willie playbook. As a side note, Robbie’s been talking about closing the store for 10 years now so its not like this decision was made yesterday.

Ray you are an idiot. What would you prefer a Walmart Superstore or Target Superstore. Promote big business and put the small guy out of business. Alveys Mall should not have been protested against its not like it is a mega store, which very well could replace it. I prefer to go to small mom and pops but that is my preference. You were also probably one of the people that protested disney in Gainesville and look where that got us. Alveys store was there for the community - helping sponsor their little league programs and other community activities.

Good to see the family that destroyed the quaint Catharpin setting with their mega-store complex is finally driven out of business. Local residents protested strongly against the Alvey Mall complex but were ignored by the PWC BOCS.
