A man died in an industrial accident at an asphalt company in Gainesville Tuesday according to Prince William County Fire & Rescue spokesperson Randy Earl.
According to Earl, a minor explosion caused the unidentified man to lose his balance on a ladder and fall more than 50 feet to the ground. The man died at the scene of the accident and two other workers were taken to Prince William Hospital to be treated for burn injuries.
Investigators from the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry were on the scene Tuesday afternoon after the county and city of Manassas responded to the accident, said Earl. Department of Labor spokeswoman Jennifer Wester said the explosion involved an asphalt tank at Chemung Contracting at 7201 Rail Line Court in Gainesville but isn’t sure whether the people involved are employed by Chemung.
Wester said the investigation – which will determine whether occupational health and safety standards were being met — could take up to six months.
Prince William Fire and Rescue and the Department of Labor had no other information at this time.
