RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ The judge who presided over the trial of sniper mastermind John Muhammad has been appointed to the Virginia Supreme Court.

Gov. Tim Kaine on Friday named LeRoy Millette Jr. to the state’s highest court. Millette has been a judge on the Virginia Court of Appeals for less than a year. Before that, he was a circuit judge in Prince William County, where Muhammad was convicted of killing Dean Harold Meyers during the 2002 sniper shootings.

Kaine also appointed Chesterfield County Circuit Judge Cleo Powell to the Court of Appeals and Richmond attorney James Dimitri to the State Corporation Commission.

The General Assembly failed to agree on the judicial positions, leaving the appointments to Kaine. The appointments are subject to legislative confirmation.
