In response to the growing number of bus riders on its Manassas to Washington, D.C. route, a local bus company has added a new weekday commuter service.
The new OmniRide bus route, which begins Tuesday, runs from Liberia Avenue to various downtown Metrorail stations and the Pentagon.
The new route follows the same route as the M6R route that exists today, said Christine Rodrigo, spokeswoman for the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission.
The bus route takes travelers non-stop along Interstate 66 during peak rush times.
The new route originates at the Manassas Mall, picking up passengers at 7:15 a.m.
The aging fleet of buses is stretched to capacity and finding resources to create the new route required some creative thinking, Rodrigo said.
The schedule for the new route, M8R, is:
• Manassas Mall—7:15 a.m.
• Portsmouth Commuter Lot—7:21 a.m.
• Williamson & Stonehouse—7:30 a.m.
• State Department—8:36 a.m.
• 18th Street & Pennsylvania Avenue NW—8:40 a.m.
• 14th Street & Pennsylvania Avenue NW—8:49 a.m.
• Pentagon—8:58 a.m.
She said the average number of daily riders in April 2008 was 13 percent greater than in April 2007.
She attributed the increase in OmniRide riders to frustration with road congestion and higher gasoline prices.
