When President-elect Barack Obama is sworn in Jan. 20, some local teachers, parents and children want to be there.

But as of right now, most of them will be in the classroom.

Prince William County Schools are scheduled to be open on Jan. 20, but some local parents and teachers are asking the School Board to change that.

At Tuesday’s board meeting, one parent, Tracey Brooks, said she hoped the School Board would make inauguration day a holiday, now and in the future.

“The experience and impact of actually participating in an event is far more educational and valuable than just watching it on television or hearing about it from others,” Brooks said.

She’s not the first parent to ask, board members said.

“We have all received a number of e-mails about this,” Grant Lattin, board representative from Occoquan, said at the meeting.

As it stands now, students who are attending the inauguration can take an excused absence to do so, school officials said.

But the date falls in the middle of high school exams and is a scheduled parent-teacher conference day for elementary schools, where a half-day is currently scheduled.

And a school board policy could prevent teachers and school staff members from taking leave that day, which falls the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day, already a school holiday, Prince William Education Association president Bonnie Klakowicz said at the meeting.

“I suggested to Dr. [Stephen L.] Walts that we declare Jan. 20 a snow day,” Klakowicz said.

School board members said they understand the concerns and, while they haven’t made a decision yet, they want to talk about it.

They plan to discuss the possibility of closing schools that day at their December meeting.

“Whether we adopt a change at all would be determined that night, but I think it’s worth talking about,” Lattin said.

Board member Denita Ramirez, Woodbridge, said she’d support the change.

“I would definitely support this day in history as a day off for all students and staff to be able to attend,” said Ramirez.

Prince William County has never closed schools on inauguration day, Ramirez said.

So far, both Manassas and Manassas Park schools will be open on Jan. 20.

Some other area school districts, including Fairfax County, will be closed.

Just why wasn;t the School Board and central office staff prepared for any Innauguration?? It comes every 4 years??? Could be it’s History making??But the School Board can’t even think far enough ahead when working out days off from school. Why since MLK day was the day before Innauguration, didn’t they think gee, I’d rather have Jan.20th off.??Course it will be the same ones who say,gee can’t go to school MLK Day either. Just where does it stop??Our kids need more educated school hours, NOT LESS. Wake up.

I don’t know what the big fuss is about. The elementary kids had the day before voting off at the last minute and that was suppose to be a half of day. It may not be too important to all the hating republicans but, how cares what ya’ll think. I say make the kids go to school on MLK day and have the next day off. I believe they should be off both days but, to make it easier for the ones that are complaining, take MLK away. And for the teachers, you guys work real hard. I don’t believe you should have to take the day off without pay. What happened to a personal day with pay. This whole thing is out of hand. It’s not gonna kill the school system to let the kids off for one more day. What happened to make up day if it’s that serious. How bout, counting it as a snow day.  There are plenty of ideas that can solve the problem.

dcorb1966- Thank you for defending teachers!

For those who said, “Get a substitute,“ we can’t.  As the article stated, we are not able to take the day off after a holiday unless we take it without pay.

We get only get paid for 35 hours when most of us work close to 45 hours a week.  Asking us to give up a day of pay is ridiculous.  No one else would do it.

All we are asking for is the chance to attend a monumental moment in history.

I bet you all support the schools when they send our children to school for 1/2 a day during these budget times…again wasting fuel, lunches and other costs.

scotty beam me up…you know the rest

No…there should be no holiday for January 20th.  School board should deny this request.

ejben- First of all, don’t blame the teachers. They are so underpaid and have way more responsibility than most in their job. Also, to ask them to take a one day furlough when they barely make 30-40,000 dollars is crazy.
Due to the budget, some teachers purchase their own supplies for OUR kids. Although, with comments like yours, I doubt you have any children.

drwho - do you really think any business will successfully operate on this day with 3 million people projected to come into the DC metro area. Traffic will come to a halt….
I doubt there will be much of anything open due to this.

How about this….the savings on fuel for buses and reduced energy cost will be enough savings to close. Lets face it, I doubt kids will learn no more at school on this day as compared to attending og watching from home. I bet schools if opened, will only have their kids watch on TV anyway. SO why pay the energy and fuel to do what they can do at home?

Wonder what all the Brains were thinking when the calendar was done for this year? Everyone knew that Jan 20 was Ingnauration Day so why wasn’t it decided when all of the schudule was talked about?
Now in a crunch,I think that teachers should go with out pay,but then what does that do to those who want to follow the schudule and not mess up the Exams.???The kids can learn as much or more by being in the class room.
Lets get real we need more school days not less. Teachers, get a Substitue.Better yet maybe we need to add back in and forget a Martin Luther King Day. We are getting to carried away with all these added Holidays.

And for the majority of parents who will not attend there will be a major child care problem.

But on the good side this could be a day without pay for al the school employees so that the school system can save money in the budget.  It would certainly not be fair to give the school employees an additional holiday during this horrible budget cycle.
