Dale Boulevard could reopen as early as May 28, one Virginia Department of Transportation official said on Wednesday.

Crews could finish earlier than the hard and fast deadline of May 30, which they also released on Wednesday, said Mike Salmon, VDOT spokesman.

Preliminary cost estimates have reached $400,000 to repair the washout that occurred on May 12.

Half of that cost is paying for employees who are working 12-hour shifts, seven days a week.

"Once the asphalt is restored, we will open the road to traffic and that could be May 28, if all goes as planned," Salmon said.

All lanes of Dale Boulevard have been shut down for a week and a half after heavy rains washed out a portion of the road.

Crews are currently repairing a water main under the road. VDOT signed an agreement with a paving contractor to complete the repairs after crews finish backfilling the washout.

Crews should have the washed-out area backfilled by Friday and paving could begin by Tuesday.
