Some of the first steps toward widening Interstate 95 six miles from Newington to Occoquan begin Wednesday.

That’s when the Virginia Department of Transportation has announced the first lane closures for the three-year project. Construction begins in early March.

The boundaries of the project on the northbound side are from exit 160 to just north of the Pohick Bridge overpass. On southbound I-95, the project runs from the Fairfax County Parkway to Va. 123. VDOT announced closures for north and southbound lanes through Friday to allow crews to place signs and barriers between exits 166 and exit 160.

SOUTHBOUND

The right shoulder between exit 166, Fairfax County Parkway, and exit 160, Woodbridge, will be closed each day between Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

NORTHBOUND

The right shoulder between exit 160, Woodbridge, and exit 166, Fairfax County Parkway, will be closed each day between Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
