Loudoun County bus fares will increase from $6 to $7 a trip starting in September, but faced with the alternative of high gas prices and long commutes, more suburbanites are choosing to ride to work rather than drive. (Watch video at right.)

The county has seen a 23-percent increase in ridership in the first six months of 2008 over the same period in 2007.

The commuter buses, which start in Purcellville and end in the District, have a 93-percent on-time performance, according to the county.

“That says a lot for a bus that fights traffic,” said Nancy Gourley, the commuter services chief for Loudoun County.

With 33 buses headed toward Washington every morning, she’s seen first hand how gas prices have affected commuter habits.

“They could drive—a lot of them have access to a car,” she said.
