Police and fire investigators are trying to determine what sparked a Monday morning blaze in Woodbridge that left a woman dead and a man suffering serious burns.

Firefighters were called to the 15200 block of Valley Stream Drive in Rippon Landing at 12:47 a.m. Monday, where they found the victims. The woman was dead at the scene, fire officials said. The man was flown by helicopter to an area hospital. His condition was unknown Monday evening. Their names and ages have not been released.

A volunteer firefighter also suffered minor injuries. He was treated at Potomac Hospital and released, Prince William fire and rescue spokesman Randy Earl said.

The blaze — the county’s first and only fatal fire this year — left about $200,000 in damage to the townhouse, but firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to adjacent homes, Earl said.

A man who declined to give his name lives in one of the homes firefighters saved. He and his wife live next door to where the blaze occurred.

He said he heard a man screaming and he told his wife to call 911. When he went outside to investigate he said “the house was engulfed in flames” and there was nothing he could do. He added he never heard the woman scream for help.

Neighbors described the man and woman as a quiet couple.

“She would pet my dog as I walked him around the neighborhood,” said Joe Mack, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 22 years.

Mack said she was studying to become a veterinarian while working at a vet’s office in Springfield. He said she liked working with horses.

Neighbors said she didn’t have any pets of her own.

well you sure were right (olusion) about suggesting that he killed her.  My foot is in my mouth now.  I’m glad they got him.  They should fry him.  Burn him.  Torture, torture, torture him.  And Ellery I’m sorry that you thought your brother wouldn’t do something like this.  It’s hard to think that a family member is capable of these tyes of violent, murderous crimes.

I am sorry your brother made such a poor choice. He will have to live with it and pay for it for the rest of his life. He put my entire family in grave danger by lighting his end of the building on fire. I hope he has A LOT of time to think about that.

Hmmmm it would appear that the police are sure of what happened, since they have now charged him with murder.

Look at his actions. I don’t know about the rest of you but if my spouse can’t get out neither will I. I would die trying to save her rather then leave her to burn. This guy is recorded to be abusive and then his wife suddenly is dead in a fire that he survives? On the other hand I will give the police kudos because they are being vigilant in their efforts. They have put great effort into solving this “possible” crime. As we speak an officer stands guard day and night at the scene to maintain its integrity. I believe that they have made a great effort and hope they can bring this situation to a close fairly.

I was listening to the scanner and they had the police out there earlier in the evening for a domestic dispute.

Justice from what?  Are you suggesting that the man of the house killed her?
