Official: Immigration crackdown pushes down crime

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) _ A Prince William County official is attributing a decline in certain types of crime last year to the county’s crackdown on illegal immigrants.
A study released last week says homicides declined by 44 percent from 2006 to 2007. The incidence of rape fell 33 percent, robberies declined 23 percent, and aggravated assaults declined 18 percent.
County board Chairman Corey Stewart says the decrease is due to the resolutions cracking down on illegal immigrants in the county.
The county first started discussing the issue last summer, though no policy changes went into effect until this year.
Nancy Lyall of the immigrant advocacy group Mexicans Without Borders says many crimes are simply going unreported now because immigrants are afraid to go to police.

You are talking about illegal alien crime statistics are you not AntiBVBL? Since most illegal crimes and statistics are not reported properly or lumped in with legal immigrant crime statistics. LOL Chris Cummings

Just completed month-by-month analysis on the crime rates for 07, and have discovered they are actually lower in the first half of the year PRIOR to the passage of the resolution. January - June stats are lower for buglary, auto theft, larceny, assault, robbery, and even murder. Although, according to the police department, murder and rape are not trendable. Did the Chairman not check the numbers or the police departments report before making these outlandish claims?

What Chief Deane never discusses is that 20% of the suspects in the cases involving his Robbery Suppression Unit efforts where the victim was able to determine race of the suspects, the suspects were Hispanic. The statistic is probably higher because it is difficult to determine the race/ethnicity of a suspect when they are wearing a ski mask or bandanna in the commission of a crime. If the suspect was known to be a member of a violent Hispanic gang, that would be another reason why a victim would not report the race/ethnicity of the suspect.

Yes Ray <rose colored glasses>, unscrupulous renters and mortgage companies have been renting or selling homes to illegals. Ray enforcement of laws against businesses hiring illegals would be better than just border security. I noticed that you omitted that one fact. LOL. Anti BVBL crime has actually been dropping since the 90’s. So you can twist those statistics however you want them. But their is still a steady amount of crime and from reading all the police briefs and news stories in the local region, i can see that illegals are committing a disproportionate number of them. Of course since illegal crime figures are not reported, and or lumped in with white or black criminal statistics. The you can truely see my anger and disgust on this issue. This is an issue that will never go away until final action is taken. LOL

What was 2006’s drop in crime rate due to? or 2005 for that matter, or 2004, well you get the point. In the years preceeding the ‘Immigration Resolution’, we experienced equal drops in crime statistics even with the supposed ‘influx of illegals’, so my question to you is why in years past has the crime rate decreased as the ‘illegal’ population increased? Chris, I’m happy to concede defeat on this issue if you’re happy with the short term and long term prospects of the PWC Resolution. I believe the solution is border security to stop illegals from entering the country and you seem to feel PWC has all the answers. I just don’t want to hear you cry when the tide comes rolling back in when the job market returns. Make me that promise and we’ll let this go.

Lisa, foreclosures have everything to do with the crashing housing market and very little to do with illegal immigrants - as illegal immigrants cannot purchase homes. Yes, perhaps a landlord was renting to an illegal family who lost their jobs and therefore he lost his source of rent money, but most homes being foreclosed are owner-occupied. The problem with this whole illegal debate is that no one seems to understand that when the jobs come back, the illegals will be right there to work them.

Crime statistics are a lie because they don’t report illegal alien crime statistics and they are lumped in with legal immigrant criminals black and white. So come on here who are you apologists kidding? My ancestors came here in the 1870’s and the 1960’s they had nothing to do with slavery and all these wrongs that you lump on to white folk. Spanish, French, English, Russian, African, Chinese. All these races and nationalities have practiced slavery, genocide, and racism of course. It is not the fault or practice of just one race. Of course with today’s media all hate crimes are automatically assumed to be only white caused. That is racist and discriminatory in itself. Why should i have to hear this? Why should i have to pay for someone else’s wrongs? Why should i be discriminated against. I mean after all aren’t we supposed to be all fair and equal? Do you not think that the foreclosures have something to do WITH the fact that the illegals are being deported? Why is it that we are called bigots for wanting ILLEGAL immigrants out of our country. Don’t you think it is rightfully so that they should not be allowed here? If we were illegal immigrants in their country they would do worse things than send us home.
