WASHINGTON (AP) _ Virginia transportation officials are cracking down on motorists who evade paying tolls on Dulles Toll Road and other roads with stiffer penalties.
Starting with a fourth unpaid toll, drivers are charged a $500 civil fine per trip. Administrative fees and court costs could also be added. Violators, who skip out on tolls, are caught through photos.
The typical fee is $25. But Deborah E. Brown of the Virginia Transportation Department says fines are raised to the maximum penalty only after motorists fail to respond to multiple enforcement notices.
Court records show that among the first cases in Fairfax County last week, five motorists each had fines topping $10,000. A dozen more face penalties higher than $4,000.
Trials are set for this summer.
Fairfax General District Court Chief Judge Donald P. McDonough encouraged transportation officials to be open to negotiating with drivers on the large fines.

I do not think they should be open to negotiations. they should pay the fee immediately when they used the toll road or at least when they received their notice. need to be more tough with them . this fine should be considered just a speeding ticket not paid. it is their problem they made the fine to become that high.
