OUR OPINION
Published: July 27, 2008

Michele Soto took her family to the beach last week so she could explain to her sons that she had breast cancer. What was to be a hard trip took an even darker turn when the Sotos received a call on
Saturday from the kennel where they had left their dog. Rex had escaped and was now missing.

For some of you out there who are not animal lovers or who don’t have pets, the sadness that such an event produces may be hard to understand.

But a pet can be as much a part of someone’s family as people, and the loss of a pet can be a tragic, traumatizing event for adults and children alike.

That’s why we are happy to say that the dog was found and returned to the Sotos Thursday.

Our hearts go out to the Sotos as they go through this trying experience, but we also send our happiness for their family member returned.

Our readers should take this opportunity to reflect on the impact pets have on their lives. They can ease the pain of loneliness, curb the pain of sadness or simply add to the enjoyment of living for the
whole family.

Their role in family life should not be overlooked. Pets can make life richer, but their loss can cast a dark shadow.

We are happy that shadow has been removed from the Sotos. They deserve to have Rex back in their lives.
