ONLINE READER REACTION
Published: July 5, 2008
These are some of the online reader reactions to an article about the closing of Alvey’s Grocery. The store’s final location closed Monday. The store has been in the Alvey family for 133 years.
Sorry to see Alvey’s Grocery close after all these years. It was a great little store with great people. Best of luck to all who will be moving on. Thanks for all of your service over the years.

Good to see the family that destroyed the quaint Catharpin setting with their megastore complex is finally driven out of business. Local residents protested strongly against the Alvey Mall complex but
were ignored by the Prince William Board of County Supervisors.

Alveys will truly be missed. I have shopped there for the last 25 years and will definitely miss them.

If I remember right, the developers of the Alvey Mall used the good name of the Alvey family and their commitment to occupying space in the new shopping center to get Board of County Supervisor
approval. This was all based on how “unsafe” the old store was to the area traffic pattern. So what did the Alveys do? Simply rent out the old store, which continued the unsafe traffic pattern while adding
new traffic to an existing quagmire. The Alvey’s are wonderful people and have done good things for the community, but that mall was from the Slick Willie playbook. As a side note, Robbie’s been talking
about closing the store for 10 years now so its not like this was decided yesterday.

Everyone that works there is so nice. I work next door and it was nice to just go over and pickup groceries or get an ice refill. Thanks for being great neighbors we will miss you.
