Flashbacks of another campaign

WASHINGTON

It’s an election between old and new.

The Republican presidential candidate is a former war hero and seasoned senator who would be the oldest president in history when he starts his first term. His opponent is a much younger, charismatic
Democrat.

The Republican’s age and health are campaign issues, as is his temper. Falling behind in the polls, he attacks the news media for its biased coverage of the campaign.

So whose idea was it to rerun the 1996 Bob Dole presidential campaign in 2008?

I heard rumblings of John McCain as Bob Dole a few weeks ago while in Maine on vacation. A staunch Republican — who’ll vote for McCain without enthusiasm — nevertheless said he’s worried about
November.

It feels like Bob Dole all over again, he said, shaking his head. And that was before the latest series of McCain gaffes.

Comedian Jay Leno said Wednesday night, “I don’t want to ... say McCain is running a lackluster campaign, but his Secret Service codename is ‘Bob Dole.’”

The way it looks today, McCain could be headed for the same outcome as Dole in 1996, who lost to incumbent Bill Clinton 49 percent to 41 percent. Several polls show Obama with a comfortable lead
nationally over McCain.

But it’s way too early to crown Obama the victor, as some political observers seem eager to do. Anything could still happen in 100 days until voters go to the polls. McCain could shake the perception
that he’s faltering. After all, he has already proved himself a political Lazarus once in this campaign. He had been given up for politically dead last summer and came back stronger.

And yet, comparisons with Dole are striking. Dole was 73 on Election Day 1996 when he lost to incumbent Bill Clinton, 50. McCain will be 72 in November, and Obama 47.

Like Dole, McCain has faced age and health issues. Both ran for president as cancer survivors. McCain so far has avoided the kind of embarrassing moment Dole had when he fell off a stage during
campaign event, raising questions about his agility and ability.

But the constant coverage of McCain’s misstatements has led to questions about whether he’s showing his age. His staff insists that anyone who’s onstage with reporters all day is bound to misspeak,
so what’s the big deal?

Even Mother Nature failed to cooperate. Hurricane Dolly kept McCain from what was to be a high-profile trip to an offshore drilling rig.

How bad is it for John McCain? The man who once was called the media’s darling now pursues the classic loser strategy of bashing the news media. McCain basked in media love in 2000 when he was
the “maverick” running against George W. Bush in the Republican primaries.

Now McCain whines that the news media is in love with Obama. McCain put up a Web video with sound bites of silly media types blathering about how impressed they are with Obama. It’s sickening to
watch the sycophants, but it also makes McCain seem jealous of their attention.

Dole, in the final weeks of the ‘96 campaign, complained bitterly that The New York Times would run only “anti-Dole” stories and didn’t pay enough attention to fundraising scandals surrounding Clinton.

Nothing says loser louder than complaining about the media. Surely, someone could have learned that since the first George Bush, running against Clinton in 1992, put out “Annoy the media. Vote Bush”
bumper stickers.

McCain did get a boost when The New York Times failed to run his op-ed, because it provided fodder to McCain’s argument that he has been wronged. The same newspaper broke the story about
McCain’s close friendship with a woman lobbyist.

McCain should not be surprised that Obama reaped lots of good coverage on his trip to Europe. It was McCain after all who goaded Obama to visit Iraq, even putting a counter on the McCain Web site to
show how long it had been since Obama’s first visit.

McCain evidently isn’t much of a chess player. Anybody could have anticipated that Obama’s next move would be to extend the trip to so that he could walk on the world stage.

Obama goes on a world tour and gets compared to JFK. Poor McCain may be this year’s Bob Dole.

The trashing of an American Hero by you libs is disgusting. He has more mental capacity in his big toe then most of you have collectively. As your BOY BHO said so eloquently, JUST WORDS. That’s all BHO has. Still waiting for you libs to give me one legislative accomplishment of Obama. He is a Lawyer that barely practiced law. He is a Legislator who has barely legislated. He is a radical lefty and he is not going to win this election. People are now starting to see through the very thin resume that he has. Just look who he associates himself with. Admitted Terrorist who bombed Federal Buildings, racist minister, corrupt businessmen there in Ill. Just shows the modern Democrat Party for what it is. Just the party of NO. Your NO policy to drilling is backfiring on you libs. Even the citizens of CA are now in favor of off shore drilling. Again, you libs are on the wrong side. Going to be tough filling up those liberal limousines with corn based ethanol. The new book just released about Obama is very enlightening. It sheds the true light on this calculated politician. He is the most unqualified person ever to run for President.

Phdee it is very possible, he was a POW for about 6 years. Your point being? As i have said many times before i am no fan of McCain or Obama and more than likely currently depending on VP picks i will not be voting. Both are going to raise taxes and try to open the floodgates on illegal aliens. If Obama picks Kaine <the worst Gov. in recent Va. memory> or Clinton who is roundly hated by many groups i will vote against him. Although i have to admit Obama’s gaffes are starting to pileup. Or is that just another senior moment for him. Grant it Sen. McCain is off his rocker as well. LOL Chris Cummings

Senator Barack Obama traced his “very existence” to the generosity of the Kennedy family, which he said paid his Kenyan father to travel to America on a student scholarship and thus meet his Kansan mother. But contrary to Obama’s claims in speeches in January at American University and in Selma last year, the Kennedy family did not fund a September 1959 airlift of 81 Kenyan students to the United States that included Obama’s father. Oops....

Hey Ron did you forget about Obama’s lie about his uncle liberating Auschwitz or was that another senior moment for you? Israel is a friend of Israel? Presidents serving for 10 years? Want some more? By the way at least Czechoslovakia existed, unlike 57 states. LOL Chris Cummings

ZCX.  One election back, the Bush campaign alleged McCain was mentally ill?  Is this still true?

We have a GREAT candidate in Senator Obama - really don’t understand the comment “It’s a shame we don’t have better candidates.”

And I happen to think there’s a big difference in a “gaffe” about 57 states (Obama) and repeatedly referring to a country that hasn’t existed for 15 years (McCain - Czechoslovakia), or not being able to remember why he voted the way he did on a key piece of failry recent legislature (McCain - a bill approving Medicare coverage for Viagra but not contraceptives).

The world trip Obama’s opportunity photoshop, did not help to conquer American voters. Obama’s travel with three top PR from three of the most “trusted” unbiased news channels did not help to stretch his lead , according to recent polls over the old McCain, a candidate that still can’t get the support of the conservative voters. Not His speech to a crowd of Germans waiting for an announced concert of reggae artist Patrice and rock band Reamonn, nor his visit to Iraq convince Americans that he can be the best Commander in chief or he will be better than is opponent McCain in foreign policy. Obama was unable to answer a simple question to Katie Couric from CBS when she asked four times whether the troop surge he had opposed was instrumental in reducing violence in Iraq. Obama answered straight from talking points by citing “the great effort of our young men and women in uniform”, that sounded like the old politics. His comment about to bomb Pakistan, an ally country or accept unconditional meetings with the enemies of United States only show is inability to make important decisions that can lead to big mistakes and we do not need more of those. By the way, not Dole, JFK, Carter, Bush or Clinton are running in this election , only Obama and McCain.

One very big flaw in your comparison.  Bill Clinton was running for reelection and was the incumbent President.

Also, you state, “But the constant coverage of McCain’s misstatements has led to questions about whether he’s showing his age.”

One must wonder what would happen if the media covered Obama’s constant gaffes.  57 states?  Presidents serving for a total of 10 years?  Israel is a friend of Israel?  Seriously, Harvard must grade on a curve.
