Language as a measure of diversity

In spite of the anti-Hispanic policies that local elected officials have pushed during the past year, our community remains diverse and, for the most part, a desirable place to live. Contrary to the desires of
the politicians, businesses, government offices and private individuals throughout Prince William County have made worthwhile efforts to ensure that everyone is welcome.

The Prince William County school system, for example, has a comprehensive ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program in order to meet the needs of students that represent over 120
different languages and cultures. The main ESOL office Web page also includes the following commendable statement: “We, the teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program of
Prince William County Public Schools, believe that speakers of other languages hold the same rights, privileges, and responsibilities as other students in the United States.”

Additionally, some of the school district’s Web pages are in different languages to meet the needs of parents and students. For example, The Central Registration and Languages Center provides pages in
both English and Spanish.

The Northern Virginia Community College also promotes language diversity. The Woodbridge campus, for example, will offer 23 sections of Spanish instruction this fall, more than any other language and
more than in any previous year.

Many county activities also try to be inclusive. The Chinn Park Regional Library has an excellent collection of books in Russian, German, French and Spanish, both for students and for adults. Right next
door, the Chinn Aquatics and Fitness Center attempts to meet the needs of its many patrons by having signs in both English and Spanish (locker instructions, spas, etc.) Additionally, when I visited the
pool recently I was pleased to discover that two of the lifeguards had at least a working grasp of Spanish.

Elsewhere, the county police offices at the Gar-Field sub-station are noteworthy in that they have numerous signs in both English and Spanish to assist persons who have business with the police or with
the magistrate.

Local businesses have perhaps done the most to communicate with all county residents, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds. McDonald’s restaurants, Auto Zone, Home Depot, Shopper’s Pharmacy
and Lowe’s are among those leading the way in hiring multi-lingual workers and in posting signs that are both in English and in Spanish. In addition, Lowe’s maintains a “Language Line” at customer
service counters in each store. At the touch of a button, a customer can access a translation service of more than 100 different languages, so they can shop for home improvement products in the
language that makes them feel most comfortable. In addition, “help” buttons, located throughout the store aisles, are primarily in English, but can be found also in Spanish, depending on the market.

The Sport & Health Club in Woodbridge stands out as another business that promotes and respects diversity. Membership counselors who speak both English and Spanish are available at all times to
accommodate members with different backgrounds. Lifeguards are temporary workers from Eastern Europe, and they speak not only English but also Russian, Ethiopian, Ukrainian or Polish, depending
on the country they came from.

In spite of all these positive trends, some politicians in our area contend that only English should be spoken or appear in written documents because English is the “official language” in the state. The
Code of Virginia, however, neither requires nor prohibits government operations in languages other than English. The relevant statutes on this issue do not, of course, apply to private businesses and to
individuals, regardless of the circumstances.

<I’ve been to Europe and in most of public offices are signs in different languages, in commercial stores are signs in different languages.>
I don’t know what country you visit. But only Spain ( in Galicia and the Vasco country) and Belgium where have two official languages French and Flemish have more then one languages in their Governmental offices they conduct business in no other language that the local language. Does Germans, French, Spaniards have in their school classes in different languages to accommodate immigrants? No.
Does most countries around the world teach English because it is the most important language in the world?. Yes

“Signs in public offices should be in one lenguage only, each Government conduct their bussiness in their own language”, I find this remarks selfish and lacking of understanding, any form Government is appointed to satify the needs of the public and to oversee the wellness of it’s citizens, I’ve been to Europe and in most of public offices are signs in different lenguages, in commercial stores are signs in different lenguages, does that mean every country has lost their own lenguage? ofcourse not! that makes the experience for tourists or visitors more welcomed. I’m not saying we should do the same here or that we should be hanging signs in different lenguages averywhere but we should stop yelling to the public that within our territory everything should be conducted in “English only”. if that would be the case what should we do about the millions of tourists that come to visit the US every year? what should we do with new residents that come to live to this country? or worse, we gonna have to change the name of many cities, instead of San Francisco we would have to say Saint Francis? instead of Colorado State we would have to say Reddish State? nothing could be more absurd! bottom line is that no one is trying to eradicate English like many selfish people are trying to make us believe. that’s simply not true.

<Learning about other cultures is fun, enriches and raises our standard of living, if you don’t believe me, ask any European why most of them speak 7 different lenguages>
Europe a continent of the size of US , has a rich and diverse culture. However , language in every nation is a part of their culture that they always preserve. Signs in public officer are in one language only, signs in commercial offices are in the language of the country and also” English” . Each Government conduct their business in their own language , no two nor seven. English is recognized as the language everybody must learn. If someone follows F1 races; drivers, engineers and crew speak in “English”. English must be the official language, in schools, and Government business.

Ecellent Article! something I don’t understand is why some people want to make English the “official language” when English has been and will always be our official language? speaking different lenguages does not mean we give up ours!. Instead of inventing idiotic laws we should be proud of our America, because is here where languages, cultures, and races come together. Learning about other cultures is fun, enriches and raises our standard of living, if you don’t believe me, ask any European why most of them speak 7 different lenguages!

Speaking of ignorance, peedee, what makes you think I am a Republican? And why do you lash out at anyone who disagrees with you? Talk about Fascism.

Gary puts his opinion out there and should expect some criticism. You seem to be his self-appointed pit bull. Perhaps you have some serious anger issues, and you use this forum to vent. I guess it’s better that you do that here rather than taking it out on your child or spouse, but I think I’ll just use the old “ignore” key when I see your name.

Once again Godwin’s law is proven correct.

phdee, you seem to have alot of anger issues and you have trouble dealing with confrontation without lashing out. Maybe you should see someone about that? You should also proof read your posts before hitting the submit button.

nonmom:  No, I am not Mr. jacobsen’s editor.  I don’t even know him. I can tell thaqt your skills, education, and knowledge are as lacking as Palin’s and McCains.  There is nothing wrong with Jacobsen’s writings.  He writes an OPINION column.  I forgot that as a die-hard ignorant Republican no one is supposed to write anything but what your ignorance approves of.  Just like fascist nazis.  Heil Hitler!!!
