Listen closely, I’m whispering

They say if you want to get someone’s attention, it’s better to whisper than to shout. While that may be true, I’ve found that if you whisper too low, the other guy can’t hear you and you wind up repeating
yourself, which can spoil the mood, especially if you’re angry and want to stay that way.
But I’m lucky. When I really want to glean the attention of the populace, I merely have to write a column about: 1) illegal immigration; 2) Corey Stewart; 3) or a combination of both. And, surprisingly,
despite some rather biting commentary in this space last week about this hydra-headed issue that has divided Prince William, I was chagrined to find that of several follow-up e-mails to yours truly, only a
mere handful could be categorized as truly ugly and hateful. I must say this is a vast change from only a few months ago, when a similar column brought out the rage and wrath in far more in the region.
Maybe some of you have changed your views? Or moved.
Some correctly pointed out to me that although I suggested the next election might be used to correct a few misgivings some of us may have over the current county board of supervisors and its illustrious
young chairman, alas, it will be a while before any such election will be forthcoming. Others took the time to point out that you, too, have lived in the region for many years and have never seen the county
as divided, and divisive, as it is today. Many of us agreed (like an adjacent editorial on this page last week) that while we still have a lot going for us here, the county’s clumsy approach to immigration
would do far more harm than good, at least in the long run.
Of course, last week’s column did prompt a few of those insightful and well-measured responses, which usually began with some salutation worthy of Shakespeare, such as (and I’m paraphrasing): “Dear
Mr. Imbecilic Moron: Who made you judge and jury?! I have lived here forever, which is a heck of a lot longer than you! Corey Stewart is a savior to this county! And by the way — you’re a no-good liar, to
boot!!”
Another couple of notes that, quite frankly, at least to me seemed to lack genuine warmth, started out with something like: “Dear Mr. Imbecilic Moron: I am not a racist! And I am certainly not a bigot! Just
who do you think you are?! Maybe you are a racist and maybe you are a bigot! Well?” (Perhaps you can tell that not everyone who e-mails me has served on a debating team or taken any logic courses
in school.)
While it may be true some of these folks would be lost without their exclamation points, the fact that this is a family newspaper prevents me from sharing with you exactly how some of these particular
missives ended. But let’s put it this way — if I were physically able to take at least one letter writer’s closing advice, I would now be heading to Beijing as a proud member of the U.S. Olympics
gymnastics team, vying for gold in the double-jointed acrobatic competition.
So for those of you who added your two cents’ worth to last week’s ongoing debate, (whether it be online, in print, or via e-mail), pro and con, thanks for paying attention — which cannot be said of a
growing number of people these days on many issues. Perhaps this year’s presidential campaign is changing that, perhaps not.
In the meantime, a bit of whispering may be a nice alternative, now and then, to the constant shouting matches all around us. And I say that, of course, as your much beloved and bona fide Dear Mr.
Imbecilic Moron.

Anonmom,
I did show up last November, and I did vote. I still got stuck with Cory Stewart as our BOCS.

RonCharest, the people who cared showed up to vote, and their candidate was elected. The people who didn’t bother to show up and now oppose anti-illegal immigration initiatives get no sympathy from me. Sorry if you wish democracy worked otherwise, but try to show up next time.

One more thing - maybe Mr. Merli can explain the logic in the following statement:
“I am a Christian, and personally support the definition of marriage within my faith. However, I strongly believe in separation of church and state. I also believe in basic notions of fairness for all of our citizens. Consequently, as a member of the United State Senate, I will oppose constitutional amendments addressing same-sex marriage, and I will support civil unions for same sex couples.”
How does one “support the definition of the marriage” but is “against amendments addressing same-sex marriage”?!? And this comes from a Virginia Senator’s website… yeah, you guessed it…
Most probably it all depends on the Bill Clinton’s definitions of the words…

Well said Anonmom!
I seldom agree with Leonard Pitt but at least I enjoy his style and abilities in writing. And yet I give the title to our “beloved” Gary Jacobson! I do not see how these columns could possibly have possitive effect on newspaper subscriptions and I wonder why the editors keep publishing them but… what do we - normal people with traditional thinking, with “no debate skills”, who “haven’t taken logic courses in school” know… right?
It is hardly just pure convictions when it comes to liberals - they must be loving to stir up the emotions and the feelings of normally thinking people. Why else would someone write so out of touch with reality and beyond any reasonable argument?!

Anonmom,
If you check, you may discover that Cory Stewart “won” the November 2004 election with about 12% of all PWC registered voters voting for him. Not much of a mandate, and doesn’t look ike a whole lot of PWC residents (then) cared much one way or another who won.
Not much that voters really seemed to want from him then - but sure seems like a lot of “Buyers Remorse” since.

I believe John Merli was addressing the “worst of the worst” in this column: “....only a
mere handful could be categorized as truly ugly and hateful.” If the shoe fits, wear it. If it doesn’t, toss it into the trash.

Just remember, John, many of those folks who you believe have lesser intelligence than you, vote. And theirs counts just as much as your vote, which I’m sure is much more thoughtful, valid, and considered (in your opinion).
The hubris expressed in this column is indicative of this paper’s disregard for the opinions of the majority of the population in which it attempts to peddle its drivel. It’s no wonder it has no money to hire good columnists who know enough not to insult the people who might be buying its product.

Dear Mr. Merli,
I’m sure my writing could seem shockingingly coherent, and even eloquent sometimes, so I will tone it down to better fit the profile of the readers you seem to hold in contempt. (There, I believe that I just created a run-on sentence.) I’ll try to use punctuation randomly, too.
I’m sure you outnumber all of us in your debate skills and the number of logic courses you took in school. You also have learned well from the MJM to show rather open contempt for your readers and the voting public. Believe it or not, we ARE paying attention, and that is why Corey Stewart is in office today. He ran partly on an anti-illegal-immigration platform, and then he set to work doing what his voters wanted him to do. We are sorry that you could not win this one with your pen.
When have you ever seen a national columnist slap down his readers the way you have, based on a handful of emails (if you even got more than one)? I have to keep reminding myself that this is the MJM, where even the editors are grammatically impaired. Why don’t you write a column making fun of their idiotic grammar, including the apparently interchangeable “its” and “it’s” or “they’re” and “their”? The copy editors seem to be on siesta before the paper goes to press, or perhaps they just don’t know better and rely on spell check. It might not go over well with your bosses, but it would be very entertaining for the rest of us.
Enjoy your ivory tower, Mr. Merli. I’ll be down here with the illiterati working--and voting--against everything you stand for, and I’ll be more than happy to ignore your column in the future.

Dear Mr. Merli:
Thank you for pointing out once again that the “immigration resolution” is “clumsy.” That’s a nice way to put it. And thank you for pointing out the hateful emails that demonstrate lack of thought. Long-term residents who think Corey Stewart is a savior forget he (Stewart) hasn’t lived here very long either and seems to be using PWC as a pawn for his political career. In doing so, he and his “Vice” (a member of the ever-charming group, HSM) pushed their issues and this community to its max.
You, sir, have exceptional critical thinking skills for an “imbecilic moron.”
Sincerely,
Katherine Mercurio Gotthardt
