Finding ways to protect people from guns

In that article, “Are we able to stop campus killers?” (April 13), Lt. Gen. Bruce M. Lawlor said “two things have to be focused on:  One is communication and the second is behavior.”

Did Stewart lie to us and to the media?

Changing the immigration resolution (or “strengthening” it as Mr. Stewart calls it) contradicts the very decision the Board of County Supervisors made when it chose to alter the terms of checking immigration status.

Support the use of public transportation

As a college student home from the University of Connecticut, I was quite pleased to learn that ridership on VRE and Metro was up 12 percent and 8.5 percent over April last year.

Pay attention to yourself Mr. Reynolds

When Gregg Reynolds (Thanks to all of those standing against hate, May 20, Potomac News) says that Greg Letiecq of Help Save Manassas “....goes on to assassinate the character of some members of our community,” he ought to pay more attention to his own words. What he offers in his most recent personal diatribe against Greg Letiecq is nothing more than an effort to shut down the debate about illegal immigration with hate and intimidation.

Will someone put a stop to the speeding?

What in the world has gotten into the people who, on a daily basis, speed up and down residential streets? Not a day goes by that we don’t have cars, SUVs, school buses, garbage trucks, delivery trucks and service trucks speeding on Nassau Drive.

Paper missed the point on new hospital policy

You missed the point entirely in your opinion article on May 19.

Leave a good thing well enough alone

I had no idea that Prince William Hospital was up for sale again until last year. On October 10, 2007, Mr. Sam Bajaj from the Federal Trade Commission called me about Inova making a bid to buy out Prince William Hospital because of an op-ed I wrote opposing the last attempted sale.

Global warming: Another big, fat lie

This is in response to the article of Jeff Caswell Published on May 19, 2008.

A bad week for the Republican party

Last week was not a good week for the right (holier than thou) wing of the Republican party. It began with Sen. John McCain’s favorite pastor, John Hagee, apologizing for having referred to the Catholic church as “the great whore.” Hagee expressed “deep regret”  that Catholics might have found his comments “hurtful.”

Foreign governments giving out passports

In June 2007, the Mexican Embassy set up a table at NOVA and issued passports and identification cards to its citizens already in this country.

Honoring the memory of Virginia Carper

The Manassas Community Chorale honored the memory of a Manassas native — Virginia Speiden Carper — with a concert of music by many of her favorite composers at The Manassas Baptist Church last night.

Nominate Marshall for the U.S. Senate

I support Delegate Bob Marshall as he tries to secure the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator Warner.

Get the hint that mother nature gives

Mother nature seems to be sending us a message with all the eruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes and earthquakes. The message is that we, 6.5 billion people, are guests here on earth and we don’t own the place.

Barack Obama compared to Carter

Barrack Obama has been compared to JFK for his youthfulness, soaring rhetoric and vision. However, I think a more apt comparison would be Jimmy Carter.

Thanks to all of those standing against hate

Today, I want to thank everyone in our community that helped to stand against the hate being perpetrated by Greg Letiecq’s Black Velvet Bruce Li blog.

Do what you can to stop global warming

Global warming is in the news now, though the reports only pay cursory attention to the issue, rarely if ever going deeper than the headlines.

Liberal Arlingtonian racists and bigots

What a bunch of racists — liberal Arlingtonians voicing concerns over the influx of illegal aliens from Prince William County at a recent County Board meeting.

Vote for Connolly in the Democratic primaries

Those of us that vote in the 11th Congressional District will elect a new Congressman in November. To deal with our growing domestic problems and to help redirect our foreign policy, we need strong, progressive leadership in this position.

Waste of taxpayer dollars in Virginia

It is my understanding that the Virginia Department of Health has “hired” a company to survey people in Virginia regarding health issues.

Have more compassion for the elderly among us

I am led to believe that many of our old people are not being given the compassion and kindness that they richly deserve and desperately need. People need to realize that growing old is probably the greatest of all challenges. Thoughtful and kind people can make it less difficult.

Whose responsible for controlling speeding?

Without any law enforcement in sight, motorists continue to ignore posted speed limits throughout the City of Manassas.

Comments on senior day program

Joanne Koenig Coste, a nationally recognized Alzheimer’s expert and the author of the groundbreaking book, “Learning to Speak Alzheimer’s,” sent the following comments upon hearing of the Board of County Supervisors’ decision to close the Manassas Senior Day Program.

Arts center should not be a priority

It is appreciated the article that Mr. Scarton wrote regarding the George Mason University Performing Arts Center. However, how, in good faith, can Prince William County “cough up” $26,400,000 in these acknowledged hard times for citizens?

Improve hospital, don’t give it away

Recently, editions of the Manassas Journal Messenger and the Washington Post carried a one page ad paid for by the Prince William Hospital and Inova, again promoting the merger of the two institutions.

Writer demands proof from Pineda

Mr. Pineda continues to rant about a lot of issues and topics most of which are not related to today’s illegal alien situation.

Stop keeping up with the Joneses

After reading today’s opinion piece from The (Waynesboro) News Virginian, (Borrowers beware of government’s hand), I just had to chime in.

Rezoning agricultural land in the county

It was of great disappointment and deep hurt that the Prince William Board of County Supervisors (7-1) decided to rezone 152 acres of A1, agricultural land to Planned Business District in the Bristow and Brentsville community of agricultural, historical and residential living — especially as their appointed planning commissioners were completely in denial of this rezoning.

Dog bite prevention week is on its way

May 18 to 24 is Dog Bite Prevention Week. One way to create a dangerous dog is to chain it to a tree or doghouse and leave it to pace the same patch of dirt for years on end.

Writer disappointed in supervisors’ decision

I am writing to express my disfavor with the vote cast by the Board of County Supervisors, in favor of closing down the Manassas Senior Day Program.
