If you ask me for a solution to the immigration problem, I would say to give amnesty to those illegal immigrants that are willing to pay for it and do what has to be done to receive it. Amnesty would not
mean they’re getting citizenship; it would give them either work permits or residency. To become a citizen, one would have to wait at least five years after you became a resident and would have to have
some kind of knowledge about this country. For each illegal immigrant, getting his residency would mean the government receives at least $5,000. Then when the government is tough on immigrants ...
well, they gave them a chance to become legal, and those that are still illegal should get deported.
In this country, the electoral college is key for winning an election, but citizens are made to believe that our vote counts. This country could have voted for McCain, and Obama would’ve still won the
election. They say this country is a democracy, but children continue to starve to death and children are still being “left behind.” A president will not be able to control the economy alone, and whatever
economic plan our current or future presidents bring up will not pay our bills ... at least not mine.
In this society, it’s a lie if we can consider ourselves safe. The Middle East might be famous for terrorists, but native-born Americans are not that far behind. We have a police department that will always
make mistakes, but they will never admit their faults. A police department that will easily hurt you to subdue you cannot be touched because they are quick to press charges. A police department that
relies on citizens telling on other citizens isn’t something we should really depend on.
We have to understand that if something is our fault, we should take full responsibility. That isn’t true in the justice system, for many practice name-calling as a means of attaining a “reduced sentence.” If
every criminal would exercise his or her rights, we wouldn’t see that many people behind bars.
But if we continue to fall for their tricks and believe their every word, we will never be able to have true freedom.

“Let’s talk about how it is becoming politically incorrect to say “Merry Christmas” and companies are directing employees to say “Happy Holidays” instead.“
I do not necessarily celebrate Christmas as I think all religions are a farce - but I understand I live in America where Christmas is a strong part of our culture and I take what comes my way.
I am not in the least offended if someone wishes me Merry Christmas. I may respond “seasons greetings” but I don’t make an issue of it.
I don’t believe in mixing government and religion, but I have no problem with government employees putting up trees or whatever in their offices or saying Merry Christmas at the counter.
What people say reflects on them and does not impact me in any way.
As I’ve said before, the far left is as looney as the far right.

“Ray, I don’t know what makes you an expert on immigration issues”
Not an expert but involved in the construction business - a heavily immigrant field - for about 20 years.
I see both sides of the coin every day.
“some even suggested that those who are willing to come out and register in order to become legal aliens should serve in Iraq and Afghanistan for a certain period.“
Military service has long been a path towards citizenship.
“How the illegal aliens are paid in cash? - kust like our “beloved” John Merli told us how he hired illegal aliens to do some work at his house and I doubt he paid them with a credit card, check or money order (let alone paid taxes).“
So by my take, this makes the American the illegal supporter. Cash can’t happen without a homeowner (not the business owner) being compliant.
“Companies hire illegal aliens too - most of those who clean Walmart and Kmart are undocumented,“
Yes, but Walmart is not paying cash. They pay via paycheck, which means taxes come out.
“how do you get them or their emploeyers to pay the extra 7% tax?!“
It becomes a tax line on the paycheck, unless the business owner wants to deal with the IRS, they’ll comply.
“I already said that we should seal the south border”
Been saying the same thing for months. The problem is in how to fund the security - which my 7% addresses.
“and only then the illegals who have NO CRIMINAL BACKGROUND should begin to register without those thousands of dollars fines”
I’m in full agreement there.
“I am not an expert but I do not see any better way to deal with this urgent problem.“
Starting somewhere - however small, is a step we need to take.
“Of course we can’t deport 12 (or more) million especially while more are pouring daily in the country through the ‘porous’ borders.“
And I’ve been saying the exact same thing since these pages opened in February.

Ray, I don’t know what makes you an expert on immigration issues but unless you just came from another planet you must have heard about the proposed $5000 fine and some even suggested that those who are willing to come out and register in order to become legal aliens should serve in Iraq and Afghanistan for a certain period.
How the illegal aliens are paid in cash? - kust like our “beloved” John Merli told us how he hired illegal aliens to do some work at his house and I doubt he paid them with a credit card, check or money order (let alone paid taxes).
Companies hire illegal aliens too - most of those who clean Walmart and Kmart are undocumented, farmers hire illegal aliens and even if they work using a stolen or fake social security numbers - how do you get them or their emploeyers to pay the extra 7% tax?!
I already said that we should seal the south border and only then the illegals who have NO CRIMINAL BACKGROUND should begin to register without those thousands of dollars fines (which few would be willing to pay - imagine a family of four or more) and receive a temporary work visa, which could be renewed after expiration by the consulates in their countries of origin. I am not an expert but I do not see any better way to deal with this urgent problem.
Of course we can’t deport 12 (or more) million especially while more are pouring daily in the country through the ‘porous’ borders.
That’s all I have to say about illegal immigration. Let’s talk about how it is becoming politically incorrect to say “Merry Christmas” and companies are directing employees to say “Happy Holidays” instead.

“Very few illegal immigrants will be willing to register if they are being required to pay thousands of dollars in fines or fees”
scorpio - where did I say they would be required to pay fines or fees?
“Most of the illegal workers get paid cash”
This is simply not true. Most illegal workers work under a false SS# and are paying taxes they cannot claim.
IF, they WERE paid cash - where does the cash come from? (careful how you answer as I’ve baited the hook)
“I do not see how you can make them or their employers pay additionally 7% taxes.“
Simple. Their 7% would be deducted in lue of the 7% now being withheld as SS, which they would not be entitled to, and the employer would continue to match that contriubution as they do now.
The difference is the illegal funds would be distributed back to the county as opposed to the SS fund and the employer match would go towards securing the border.
“The only way to “lure” most of the illegal workers to register is to provide a temporary work visa and, while their work visa is valid, they should apply for a green card if they wish or leave the country when it expires and apply again for a work visa in their country of origin.“
Wow! That is just like the law is today that is not working. How does this address the problem of illegal immigrants that are here now?
“Mark my words: we will not see many illegal immigrants willing to register when the government comes up with a plan and many will wonder why.“
This shows your ignorance in the field of illegal immigration and what they are willing to do to remain here under more peaceful conditions.
But - if you can come up with a better plan than my, type it up and post it here for all to read.
And the point being - the extreme positions of sending them all home or granting full amnesty are not the answers either.

Ray, your plan will not work for these two reasons:
1. Very few illegal immigrants will be willing to register if they are being required to pay thousands of dollars in fines or fees - they would rather send the money home and wait until they eventually get deported without even having to pay to get back home.
2. Most of the illegal workers get paid cash and I do not see how you can make them or their employers pay additionally 7% taxes.
The only way to “lure” most of the illegal workers to register is to provide a temporary work visa and, while their work visa is valid, they should apply for a green card if they wish or leave the country when it expires and apply again for a work visa in their country of origin.
Mark my words: we will not see many illegal immigrants willing to register when the government comes up with a plan and many will wonder why.

“My point is that it will not help much to simply register the illegal immigrants while more and more are pouring into the country”
scorpio, please find my Documented Illegal Immigrant Plan a few pages back. Read item number Seven real close.
You are 100% correct that no immigration reform can take place without border control - which is why I include both the need and provide funding with my 7% illegal - 7% employer matching Illegal Tax in my Documented Plan.

There is no such thing as 100% border proof but there will not be thousands crossing it daily as it has been for years, let me paraphrase - for decades!
Here is some statistics from the press which speak for itself:
“The arrival of U.S. National Guard troops in Arizona has scared off illegal Mexican migrants along the border, significantly reducing crossings, according to U.S. and Mexican officials.
U.S. authorities said Monday that detentions along the US-Mexico border decreased by 21%, to 26,994, in the FIRST 10 DAYS of June, compared with 34,077 for the same period a year ago.
Along the Arizona border, once the busiest crossing spot, detentions have dropped 23%, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.
Detentions dropped 31%, to 8,308 from 11,977, along the Texas and New Mexico border.“

Seal the borders (as much as possible) and then we’ll talk about immigration reform. I’m really tired of the all or nothing approach (from both sides).
now get those scum of the earth on the anti side to agree on that

I am just a little leery of terrorists since 9/11. The Canadian/USA border has miles and miles of unguarded perimeter that can be crossed at any time on foot, horseback, atv, etc.
We are a long way from having secure borders. We need to continue our efforts but I don’t kid myself that it is totally possible to be non-porous.

The main problem with illegal immigration is the south border, wouldn’t you agree? Making it less porous will make quite a difference in the numbers of immigrants crossing it on daily basis the way it is now.
The canadian border has more to do with terrorist threats, not the illegal immigration.
My point is that it will not help much to simply register the illegal immigrants while more and more are pouring into the country - it will only become statistics and help the law enforcement but will not eliminate the problem. We have to start with sealing of the south border and then decide how to deal with those who are already part of the society, pay taxes, social security and have NO CRIMINAL RECORD and those who are not here to become part of the society and especially the criminals.
