All should be vetted before being elected

I am glad to see the column on Dumfries Council member Dorothea Barr! The one statement in the article says it all —  “As long as they get paid and the fees and interests associated with them get
paid, the fact that the money gets there is the important part.”

It is patently obvious that she knows nothing about budgets, cash flow or financial management. If this attitude carries through on her actions as a council member, there will be BIG trouble in Dumfries.
This should be a lesson to all of us that each candidate should be checked thoroughly.

do right, Obama has been front, center and in our face for 4 years. If you don’t have a sense of feel for him you never will. Same goes for John McCain. We know who he is.

Sarah Palin is a whole new ballgame. Her name was not so much as whispered at ANY time during the primarys so we know NOTHING about her, other than her tendencies to lie ... err, S T R E T C H the truth in some amazing ways.

If McCain can’t make the debate Friday night, send Sarah and let’s see what she’s got.

Some appointees do get paid.  But even if they are not paid, we pay our BOCS members to make sound decisions.  Ultimately, appointees will take up BOCS time because they will have to meet and discuss policy recommendations. These meetings, especially for long-term planning, can be lengthy and frequent. Hence, one way or another, we are paying for appointees.

Ms. Gottthardt,

Appointments don’t get paid.  What are you talking about?

There are a lot of unanswered questions about Obama, because the press is patsy when it comes to questioning Obama.

Attending the debates such as the one put on by the League of Women Voters did in Dumfries brings out a lot of issues that would easily identify a solid or lack of fiscal (and other) understanding.  Furthermore, candidates’ information is available to the public.

However, this information is not available to the public when it comes to appointments.  Yet, we are asked to pay for these people as well and are condemned to accept whatever policy they recommend.

No matter who these elected or appointed leaders are, current or otherwise, what their experience is, and how their backgrounds might affect their ability to function in their appointed or elected positions.

Nationally, we have the same problem with Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Since her shocking addition to the McCain ticket, Palin has been treated like a mushroom - kept away in a dark place away from the voting public and the press.

It is appearent McCain follows the Lincoln doctrine of “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt” when it comes to allowing Palin to speak outside of controlled environments.

In Palin, we have a person not able to be vetted by the public running for a position one heartbeat away from the presidency whose only qualification appears to be a nice smile and a beauty queen wave. America deserves more information on Sarah Palin.
