In preparing for the 2008 school census, the Prince William County Public Schools Construction and Planning Services Office carefully reviewed a database of prospective mailing addresses. Using our Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, we matched each address to the Prince William County database of addresses.
We removed addresses for the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park to avoid mailing our school census forms to these independent jurisdictions, who are both conducting their own school census.
Ms. Spurlin’s March 19 letter to the editor demonstrates that PWCS obviously mailed at least one school census form to a residence in the City of Manassas. However, it has been our specific intention to not send any forms to residences in the city. We regret this error, and would ask that the affected resident(s) simply discard the errant forms.
In mailing out more than 134,000 school census forms, we apologize for the unintentional inconvenience we have caused.
We have worked carefully to conduct the state-mandated school census in the most efficient and cost-conscious manner possible, and appreciate the cooperation we are receiving from residents.

The census should have asked the question of whether or not the student and the student’s parents are in this country legally. The schools should require each student to either show some proof of legal residence upon enrollment, or be counted as an illegal resident of the county. The County Supervisors and the legal, law-abiding, tax-paying citizens of the County should be apprised of the cost of educating the offspring of people who are in this County without legal authorization.
