In response to Barbara Peacock’s letter in a recent paper regarding “spreading the wealth around,” there are just a few things to clarify regarding her biblical applications. The biblical idea that “from the
one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked,” is absolutely true.
Both the New and Old Testaments hold very high standards for our attitudes of giving. However, that is where the philosophical differences lies. The biblical standard is that the giving come from the heart
of each individual. It is not imposed on them by the government.
Those who have much in this country (both individuals and corporations) have historically given very substantial donations to charitable organizations. The more that is forcibly taken by the government,
the less there will be available for those individuals and corporations to give toward charities, scholarships, endowments and other local needs.
Let’s test people’s hearts, and offer them the opportunity to give of their own accord.
