Connolly will best fill Davis’ shoes

I must offer a strong rebuttal to the Sept. 28 letter from Robert Lang, who suggested that Congressional candidate and Fairfax County Board Chairman Gerry Connolly is running with the wrong priorities.

Chairman Connolly’s priorities are the average citizens like you and me. As the head of a locality, Connolly has a strong background in running a government like a business and can bring that experience
to Capitol Hill. Four towns in his county made Money Magazine’s “100 Best Places to live” list this summer. He has taken a leading role in demanding that the state send substantial transportation
funding to Northern Virginia. He has taken on the Bush administration for not sending dollars to the localities for No Child Left Behind. He has worked with the Sierra Club to make Fairfax more
environmentally friendly. He formed a task force to combat overcrowding in his county. All in all, he is a friend to the average citizen and taxpayer. He has consistently preached bipartisanship, believing
that it is more important to get things done, regardless of who gets credit.

While I will be sad to see Tom Davis leave, Connolly is the best candidate to fill his shoes, and on Nov. 4, I hope voters in the 11th district will join me in sending Gerry Connolly to Washington as our next
Congressman.

Tom’s biggest problems came from within the Republican Party. Notwithstanding Tom represented a liberal Democratic district, the Republican Party expected him to toe the party line and not serve his constituents. Tom is not a bad guy, and given a little more backbone to buck the Republican Party, I’d vote for him.

Tom Davis has a lot of good qualities, but when I observed him defend the administration’s policy of torture at a town hall meeting I was pretty much done with him.

12 years of Republican leadership in the Congress and 8 in the White House have driven this country into the ground. I would not vote for Jesus Christ if he ran as a Republican.

We need real change in this country…different priorities, new ideas and a members of Congress who don’t need to take off their Republican hats before they can put on their America hats.
