Comments from Obama asking American parents to not worry about immigrants not speaking English but imploring them to make sure their kids learn Spanish, are offensive. Immigrants from Latin
America need to learn English if they want to succeed in this country and not be second- class citizens.
It is good for Americans to learn Spanish because that is the language of the nannies, the cooks, the gardeners, the laborers and in addition, they can communicate with the second-class citizen who
can not speak English.
Among immigrants, Asians, African, eastern Europeans and middle Easterners, the Hispanic group are less proficient in English and because of that, they do jobs that Americans don’t do.
No other group than Latinos are “blessed” to have the “help” from government and business, providing driving license tests, election ballots and Spanish- speaking sales person.
This is not good for the Latino community because it perpetuates their status as second-class citizens.
If Obama wants to help the Latino community, he should provide more affordable or free education in order to learn English and worry for immigrants who do not speak English so they integrate to the
American society not like a second-class citizen.

Ray,
Sorry about that missing check. But don’t worry, Obama says he’s going to give you $1000 and he’ll pay for it by taxing the oil industry’s windfall profits.
If you’re lucky, the oil industry won’t hurt you too badly when they pass that tax on down to their customers.

Now the Catch-22 of all this (some of you will understand what that means) is that we criticize the immigrants for not speaking English (or at least American) then cut the very programs where they can learn to speak English (or the American adaptation of English). Make up your minds which you hate more: paying for education or getting your burger order wrong.

Yes willow, I filed my return and paid my taxes - but no ES Check for me. They just took my money and gave it to some poor dawg crying gimme, gimme, gimme.
I guess when your neighbor gets something it’s a handout. When you get something it’s a program.

Godsaveus,
Some people spend their entire lives in this country and never learn to read, write or speak American. Some of those people were born in this country to parents born in this country to parents born in this country.
If you want English as your “official language”, go to England!
And good luck with those bureaucrats who know no words with less than 4 syllables.

Make English the official Language is the solution to this problem and you will see how many immigrants will have no choice to learn English if they want leave their under-class situation. We are doing too much and wasting too much money in translators and to accommodate some ethnics groups, but not others , this is kind of discrimination ,the fact that the majority of immigrant come from Latin America it does not mean that the other groups don’t have the right to be treated equally. I guess for the good of those minority groups they have to learn English in consequence they have grater possibilities to succeed. Make English the official language and the problem will be over.

I’m right there with you T Dawg. I hope you returned that Economic Stimulus Check I paid for - you know, just to show you yourself are not one of the gimme, gimme, gimme “disgusting” people.
Or do you consider the Check part of the rights and privileges afforded American citizens? If so, I want mine.

Anonmom,
We’re already providing “free” language training for people coming here from other countries. It’s called “ESL” classes, and it’s a “one size fits all” program. No matter where the people come from, or what their native language, they take the same ESL classes.
Don’t worry your pretty little head about how your tax dollars are going to support those dirty immigrants learning a second language, instead of your tax dollars going to help bomb Iraq. many of the programs in PWC are staffed by volunteer teachers - meaning, they’re paid nothing - for teaching ESL.

Forget Spanish. Learn Chinese, they’ll soon own this country.

“It is good for Americans to learn Spanish because that is the language of the nannies, the cooks…“
No, its good for Americans to learn Spanish because it will make them smarter. They will be better educated and better prepared to compete in the world. If you’ve learned a second language, you know it actually helps you understand ENGLISH grammar better as well.
Of course, in Prince William County, if somebody suggests that you learn Spanish, the local yokels fall all over themselves to complain about all the book learning and immigrant loving.
I wonder sometimes if this county was the inspiration for that movie IDIOCRACY?
