Don’t judge just based on a name

There are many ways to judge a presidential candidate. Such things as honesty, integrity, intelligence, judgment, compassion, statesmanship, managerial ability, leadership, strength of character, service
to community or the nation, morals, ideology, criminal record, addictions or past addictions to alcohol or drugs, love of country (patriotism vs nationalism), educational achievements, honors, marital
fidelity, foreign policy experience, crisis management ability, emotional stability, ability to inspire and devotion to human rights, the quality of the environment, ridding the world of poverty and ignorance.

Those are the things I consider when I walk into the voting booth.

I never consider things like the meaning of the candidate’s name, since the candidate has no control over the name he or she was given at birth.

I also do not consider other factors such as race or gender because those are also factors over which the candidate has no control. Apparently, Sandi Teets (What’s in a presidential candidate’s name,
Potomac New/Manassas Journal Messenger, June 28) prefers to judge people by the meaning of their names.

She apparently judges a book by its cover without ever opening the book to read its contents. She obviously is afraid of people with Islamic sounding names since she says, “Hussein (a son of Islam) or
the newer and nicer sounding meaning...”(emphasis added). She prefers to make assumptions based upon the fear her dogs have of lightning.

Thus she reasons that since “Barack” means, according to her research, “Lightning bolt” and her dogs sense that lightning is bad, Obama must be “bad.” Is it any wonder that we elect presidents like
George W. Bush with reasoning such as this? Congratulations to Ms. Teets, she has brought the level of political discourse in Prince William County to a new low. I wonder what her name means?

Does she have reddish brown hair? That was the meaning I found for the name “Sandi” and I won’t even try discuss the meaning of “Teets,” since there was only one I could find and I won’t go there.

Mr. Powell,
Thank you for your words.  I read Ms. Teets’ article and simply could not believe that anyone would take the time to write such nonsense.  I also cannot believe the Potomac News printed such an outlandish missive.

I was concerned that she—along with that woman who wrote all that ballyhoo about “going to go out and buy” an American flag lapel pin because she thought that was indicative of her patriotism—represented the citizenry of Prince William County.

I am now confident that they do not—at least not all entirely.  Im sure there will always be those out there (even in Prince William County) whose intelligence quotients fall two standard deviations below the norm.

Mr. Obama is excellent for the job as President of the United States and he has my vote.  So what he does not have the “experience” (the judgement of many) but, what the hey.  Can one really say that the (man) we now (call) President have any experience?  If he does, look where that experience has put this country.

People it is time to wake up.  I learned in school (not Prince William County Public Schools mind you) that if you do what you always did, you are going to get what you always got.

I cannot believe the outrageousness.

cobra, you gloss over the 6 years of the Bush Administration’s dire results while owning a Republican House and Senate. The only way to change the downward direction of our country is to replace a Republican president with a Democratic president. If that is Obama, then so be it.

No, I’m sure Ms. Teets has blond hair.  There’s nothing else to account for one of the dumbest reasons I’ve ever heard on judging a president.  Even dumber that choosing based on who we’d most like to have a beer with. I mean, we did that back in 2000 and look where that got us.

You are correct Mr. Powell. His name matters nothing to me but he is an empty suit with absolutely no qualifications to be President of the US. He is to be judged on his qualifications and also his judgment on certain issues. I think we have all seen that he has neither. You yourself can not give us one credible accomplishment from Mr. Obama. Being a community organizer or great communicator are not qualifications to be the leader of the free world. My own Republican party has not stood its ground on conservative principals and Obama is taking advantage of that which is understandable. I am however surprised that he is the best Democrats can do in the year 2008? Dems have had the House & Senate for two years and have absolutely nothing to show for it. Gas prices are out of control and they have no solutions other then to deny us the ability to drill off our coasts. They just keep talking about alternative sources of energy which are years away. Come on Mr. Powell, where is the leadership from the Democratic Party? Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi never smile. You would think the entire world is coming to and end every time they speak. Every four years the Democratic Party puts up a save the world candidate as if life is so bad. That playbook is outdated to say the least.

So, Hussein is an Islamic name, created after Mohammed cobbled together that religion we now know as Islam? Hus - sein, 2 parts, define each, put them together to mean “son of Islam”. Any Arabic linguists out there?
Teets is probably an English corruption of the Gaelic Taite (pleasure, delight) or Tate (learn). Taite"s>Teat’s(great)>Teat’s(wheat)>
Teets.

There may be some truth to the name game. When George W. Bush is taken as a whole you get George - as in King George as in believes to be above our Constitution. W as in AWOL from his National Guard service and Bush as in hide behind the bush any time accountability is required by his administration. But no fun to pick on the outgoing guy so we’ll translate John McCain to mean more of the McSame.
