Entire Congress is failing the people

I would like to first respond to the letter titled, “How effective are the Democrats really?,” by Micah Lee. While I agree with all that he wrote, I would like to say that it is not just the Democrats and their
leadership that is failing us, it is the entire Congress. This could be the most indifferent and incompetent group of people ever brought together to govern. They are more concerned with getting reelected,
and catering to the needs of their wealthy supporters and special interest groups than they are about dealing with real problems.

I want to compliment Micah for citing the sources of the information he used. I agree that only factual information should be printed about individuals and that the spreading of falsehoods must be stopped.
I hope that the Potomac News editorial section and those writing opinions take the time to ensure that information submitted for print is factual, regardless of who or what the article is about.

Still, I wonder if a fabricated story about Sen. McCain had been printed in the Potomac News, would the outcry have been as strong. Somehow I doubt it.

“ There are no more average Joe’s in Congress. “

I don’t disagree with Cobra (weirdly enough) that there a lot of duds in congress on both sides of the aisle.  But I don’t get this call for “average Joes” among our leaders.

Personally I want our political leaders to be the smartest, most elite people our country has to offer.  I want self made men who attended the best universities in the country, started their own businesses, worked their tails off, whatever.  I want the cream of the crop.

We need motivated, smart leaders who know how to get things done.

Ben Franklin was not an average Joe.  Thomas Jefferson was not an average Joe.

Hey Cobra,

Why are you so obsessed with what I’m wearing while posting?

Between your obsessions with what I wear and who I’m sleeping with, I do think you have real issues.  Please get help.

Oh, and “SPINLESS” should be spelled “spineless.”

Term limits yes - BUT also cut, slash and eliminate any and all retirement programs for elected officials. Serve 4 years in congress and get benefits for life? Baloney.

Hey Ronnie,
We can all read the local paper. We don’t need a summary from some old kook in a house robe. Nancy & Harry are miserable legislators. They should be able to break through the barriers but both have absolutely no leadership abilities. We all saw the paper yesterday where Reid went back on his promise to have 4 Republican amendments to that bill. If you make a comprise then you should stick with it. He was pressured within to break his promise. Nice leadership. SPINLESS!!! COREY STEWART ROCKS.

Republicans don’t seem to be big on “facts”.  So I kind of doubt many would have noticed and protested a fabricated story about McCain.

I am in 100% agreement with Mr. Meckley. Both Republicans and Democrats are a miseralbe lot to say the least. There are no more average Joe’s in Congress. Everyone is a millionaire and has no clue about the daily lives of most Americans. Bring on the term limits.

Here here. I totally agree. This is the worst congress in history. Neither side of the isle is worth the salt on a Frito.

While I criticize Congressional Democrats for lacking spine, the real problem is Congressional Republicans.

When Republicans controlled both Houses of Congress, they deliberately prevented Democrats from having any input into bills through the use of procedural moves and simply outvoting any Democratic-sponsored amendments.

Now that Republicans are in the minority, they have consistently used procedural moves and (in the senate) “holds” and filibusters to block virtually any bill of significance.  Just one example occurred Monday.

The Senate rolled up several dozen bills that had previously been blocked from consideration by Sen. Coburn through his use of the “hold.” Many of these bills had Republican sponsors, and all were considered “non-controversial.” Coburn put a hold on these bills apparently because he could, and because it prevented senate Democrats from claiming any legislative victories.

On Monday, Sen. Reid rolled all these numerous bills into one package nicknamed “the Coburn Omnibus Bill,” and put it to a senate vote.  Even though many of the individual bills had Republican sponsors, the Republicans filibustered it – once again, to prevent Democrats from claiming any legislative victories.

I think we can easily tell just which party is the party of obstructionists.
