Focus on something other than the negative

Once again I bought a local Potomac News newspaper this morning in the hopes that I could renew my subscription, but I was subjected to the usual opinion pieces bashing Republicans, McCain in particular, and the current administration in general.  Shouldn’t the 30 percent of the public who still support the president, the current administration and the Republican nominee get equal time?
Furthermore, I thought we were supposed to be entering a new age of people coming together and singing songs of unity, harmony and reaching out to those with whom we disagree. Instead, what I see
are the same political barbs and personal attacks that perpetuate the ongoing battle between the two major parties. One can only take so much of this before one says “enough.”

I wish there could be more of Cal Thomas, less hostility in your editorial pieces and more positive news like the responses you received regarding the fact that the housing market is rebounding in Prince
William County. If you look hard enough you will find that there are many more positive and uplifting stories and events taking place both locally and nationally than there are negative and depressing
messages that we are constantly bombarded with. Unfortunately, the political warfare has dominated most of the news stories to the point where people begin to think that gloom and doom is what life is
really all about and the politicians purposely feed into these messages with a passion.

The fact is that most people in the country have jobs (94 to 95 percent), we have been safe and secure at home since 9-11, people are not starving and dying on our streets and life generally is pretty darn
good in this great country. I realize and feel sorry for all those who are experiencing loss as a result of the devastating weather across the country, but we are a strong stock of people and they will survive
with the help of a nation of caring people, caring organizations and a loving God. Wouldn’t the inclusion of more good news articles and opinion pieces, such as those that portray people helping people
during these recent tragedies, be a better approach for your paper, or at least making a greater attempt at such balance?  It sure would help to bring me back as a regular subscriber.

You’re quite welcome, jVa smile

But now you’ve gotten me thinking.  If “fancy” schools are all private schools; and if people who go to private schools are “elitists”; and if “elitists” are automatically Liberals; and if the government gave out vouchers so everyone could send their kids to private schools;

Then does it follow that privatizing our school system would make every school age kid from that point forward a Liberal?

Maybe we ought to be rethinking this whole “private vs public” school debate?

Thank you, Ron.  You just save me some work.

Its amazing how easy it is to shoot down conservative arguments with a little “fact checking”.  Not that it matters.  Facts are for pinko commies and elitists who go to fancy schools.

Let’s see now,

I just did what could be considered “Fact Checking,” and came up with the following:

Over the past 30 days, number of letters to the editor which were negative towards Sen. Obama:  5

Over the past 30 days, number of letters to the editor which were negative towards Sen. McCain: 2

Over the past 30 days, number of letters to the editor which were positive towards Sen. Obama: 4

Over the past 30 days, number of letters to the editor which were positive towards Sen. McCain: 2

Over the past 30 days, number of columns to the editor which were negative towards Sen. Obama: 2

Over the past 30 days, number of columns to the editor which were negative towards Sen. McCain: 0 (none)

Over the past 30 days, number of columns to the editor which were neutral discussions on the presidential campaign: 5

Personally, I’d like to see a whole lot more letters published on Sen. McCain.  Any fact-based discussion of McCain could only be construed as negative.
