Habeus corpus remains standing

Recently, the Supreme Court overturned the Bush administration’s attempt to throw out the writ of habeas corpus (the right of a prisoner to face his accusers and be told why he is being held).
Specifically, the court ruled 5-4 that detainees at Guantanamo have the right to challenge their detention in federal court.

President Bush and Justice Scalia were outraged that their efforts to eliminate one of the basic freedoms in the Bill of Rights of the Constitution was thwarted. (Keep in mind that President Bush once
said “If this were a dictatorship, it’d be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I’m the dictator.”)

Had the Bush administration had its way, the United States would have been on a very slippery slope that could lead to the total elimination of the rights that Americans have had for over 200 years.

President Bush still conducts illegal surveillance, still conducts torture and still acts as a “unitary president” without regard to the will of the people. With the 5-4 ruling, the election in November becomes
critical as John McCain would not hesitate to replace liberal justices with those more like Scalia.

The U.S. Constitution has ably served our nation for over two centuries and I for one will vote for Barrack Obama to ensure that future generations of Americans will still have the freedoms set forth and
fought for by our founding fathers.

Politics has always been a dirty game. The farmer who can’t separate the pigs from the muck in the wallow will always be dirt poor. Voters who can’t separate lies, half truths & innuendos from fact will always have poor government. No party is free from blame. To paraphrase the Bible: - a useful book, even for agnostics - For all have lied and fallen short of the righteous expectation of the governed.
The Bush administration is just not very bright. President Bush says, “We are in a war against terror”, But, he then says the “enemy combatants” in said “war” are not “terrorists”, but criminals. Wasn’t that another war, Mr. President? If the “enemy combatants” in a “war against terror” are not “terrorists”, what are they?
I would return cobra’s favor & say, “Conservatives suck”, but with their innate inability to define words, they wouldn’t understand. wink
But, at least, they are not like the fools at the UN who defined torture.
The Bush administration will not define torture beyond saying that anything that was done to them would be torture.
For those who don’t believe Liberals will fight for this nation; Go over to Arlington National Cemetery, count only those crosses that have the word “Conservative” on them, let me know how many you find.
As for Liberals running away in the name of not offend anyone, if you feel that this Liberal has offended you that was, no doubt, my intent. As for me, I’d rather be insulted than ignored.

“This President has the guts to take them on and all he gets is ungrateful liberals crying about the world hating us. “

Who exactly did Bush take on?  He was unwilling to commit sufficient ground troops in Afghanistan when we could have actually gotten Bin Laden.  Then he sent the majority of our military off to take on Saddam Hussein.  What did Saddam have to do with those 3000 dead in NYC again?  I keep forgetting.  Oh that’s right.  Nothing.

I’m glad you think Bush has done such a great job.  His approval rating hasn’t been above 30% in what three years?  I guess the other 70% of Americans just aren’t as “smart” as you.

Do some folks here require a reminder of the definition of habeas corpus? From reading Cobra’s postings it would seem that it means throwing open the gates of Gitmo and handing everyone a gift basket with an AK-47 and a kilo of C-4. This is not the case. All that has happened is that the government will now be required to make arguments in court for continuing to hold suspected terrorists. Those against whom we have evidence will stay right where they are while the innocents go home. That is the way our Constitution says it is supposed to work, but apparently believing in the American Constitution is anti-America.

First cobra, I hope you’re enjoying your vacation. Second, your Crystal Ball is not working. Celtics win 6-2, not 5-1 as your Ball predicted. So that wipes out your November forecast as being accurate. Third, are we at war with the Saudis? I thought we invaded Iraq - the country that had no involvement in 9/11. Saddam was doing a great job of keeping terrorists OUT of Iraq until Bushie opened the door for the whole region.
Liberals suck, conservatives swallow - hook, line and sinker. Please stay in Hawaii where there are no people for you to hate. Oh, and Bush has killed over 4,000 Americans - does he still have rights? Yea, until January 20, 2009.

It is very telling when you realize that all the terrorist organizations in the world are supporting Obama for President. They know that any Republican Administration will keep up the fight but Liberals will retreat and run in the name of not offending anyone. The coward who planned the 911 attacks stated in court that they were stunned by the response of the Bush Administration. They had assumed that we would again sit back and do nothing such had been the case in previous administrations. When he was caught, the first thing he said was, “Take me to my Lawyers in NY”. And how sickening is it for those that critize the fact that we water boarded this guy. They killed 3000 Americans and we are worried about his rights. As stated by Godsaveus, We will be destroyed from within and Liberals are the ones to blame. Terrorists have been attacking Americans since the early 80’s, long before either Bush Administration and we stood by and did nothing. This President has the guts to take them on and all he gets is ungrateful liberals crying about the world hating us. Liberals Suck!!!!

“We see the same old play book by Democrats every 4 years. “

Laughable.  Democrats aren’t organized enough for playbooks!

Want to talk playbooks?  Let’s see what non-issue the GOP trots out to demonize this fall and distract us from the fact that they have completely sold out middle class Americans to corporate interests.  What will it be this year?  Anything but the important stuff.

“McCain will wipe is feet with Obama in November. “

I’ll take that bet in a heartbeat.  McCain will make Bob Dole look competitive by comparison.

“It is absolutely true that if he were white, he would not be where he is.”

Why pretend that this is such a huge offense to your sensibilities?  Republicans voted rapturously for an imbecile whose status was based solely on the fact that his father was a former President.

I doubt Obama ever gained as much advantage from his race as W did from nepotism.  I must have missed your outrage over it.

Aloha from Hawaii Ray,
Keep dreaming. The Supreme Court did us a big favor. As stated by my 80 year old retired Marine Father, All NCOs’ will now instruct their soldiers that we will no longer take prisoners in this war. They will be left for dead on the battlefield. No prisoners mean no hearings or Habeas Corpus. Problem solved. Typical BS from the Anti-American left. Ok John Revay, give me just one right that you have lost during the Bush Administration. Just one. Nice try. Not surprised by your support of the Anti-American joke called Barrack Obama. It is absolutely true that if he were white, he would not be where he is. Sorry but that is the truth. We see the same old play book by Democrats every 4 years. Put up a save the world candidate as if life is so bad. Oh you bitter Liberals. Still mad about the 2000 election. What a surprise that Al Gore will not campaign for Obama. McCain will wipe is feet with Obama in November.
