Honesty on a touchy subject

Are we going to be honest about race this time?

To be honest, the answer is, for most, “no,” but I will try.

The first slaves in this country were white men, women and children — thieves, prostitutes, beggars and honest citizens — swept from the streets of England, held at Bridewell Prison and “transported” to the Virginia Colony, where most died within a year.

They arrived four months before an English captain, flying the Dutch flag, landed at Jamestown with a cargo that included “twenty and odd” Africans.

Two hundred years later, January 5, 1821, the records of Bath County, Virginia, Will Book 2, page 404, record the “emancipation” of 14 slaves, including white woman, Nancy, 18; white child, James, 2 months.; white slave Strother, 23; white woman, Sally, 30; white woman, Patsy, 21; white girl, Jane, 9; white man, Benjamin, 25; white boy, Washington, 3; white girl, Betsy, 4 and white child, Sarah Jane, 5 months. One person, in one county, in one state, with 10 white slaves. How many more whites were enslaved? How many black slave owners — and there were black slave owners — owned white slaves? Who will apologize and pay reparations to the descendants of those white slaves? I would but, how would I apologize and pay reparations to myself if I found I was a descendant?

The Constitution, in 1789, deemed a black slave to be counted as 3/5 of a free white person, but made no mention of white slaves like Strother. Did they count for nothing? No, census documents made no distinction — a slave was a slave.

An honest discussion of race can not start with the lies of white or black persons and can not continue without calling those lies, not just wrong, but lies.

Phdee i did not belittle the tragedy of slavery practiced by so few affecting so many blacks. Far from it. I am ashamed of those individuals. However i do not understand why you are still bleating racism when the only racism i am seeing is that which is practiced by illegals and their apologists. I have not seen any other forms of racism except for that in at least 20 odd years and i have lived here for 39+ years. In fact blame it on me because i am white, even though my direct ancestors did not come over until 1877 and legally i might add, no slipping across the border at night, no overstaying work visa, etc. etc. By the way my sister is married to a black man<an American through and through>. My mom had a black boyfriend for years until he passed away. God rest his soul. How dare you call me racist. You are the racist with your blind adoration of common criminals. Chris Cummings

ZCX, we had a civil war.  How long did it last?  4 or more - not quite as long as Bush has been hunting for WMD. You’re just trying to downplay the significance of such a tragedy in this country’s history. Maybe you’d like to discuss those years for blacks afrer the Emancipation - there’s lots of history not too far back.  And racism has sprung back to life in PWC and Manassas, what with the resol, ution. You are no doubt enjoying the thrill of it.

Sam B fortunately slave ownership was such a small fraction of the total citizenry at the time less than 1%, fortunately it was ended quickly with the Emancipation in 1865. Chris Cummings

A racist has the same problem as an alcohoilic. First, you’ve got to admit or acknowledge you have the problem.

I’m curious what lies Mr. Salisbury is referring to in his last paragraph. He never specifies. As for how many black slave owners owned white slaves? I’m going to go out on a limb and estimate that, if any, they were a tiny fraction of a minuscule fraction of the number of white slave owners who owned black slaves.
