How effective are the Democrats really?

Could Mr. Gary Jacobsen be any more disillusioned? Mr. Jacobsen, before you go out bashing Republican Congressmen please keep this in mind: the current Congress is controlled by the Democrats.
Here are just a few examples of what the “effective” Democrats are all about.

1. “Democrats have a plan to lower gas prices…join Democrats who are working to lower gas prices now.” — Then-Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Press Release, April 19, 2006.

2. “To free America from dependence on foreign oil, we will achieve energy independence for America by 2020 by eliminating reliance on oil from the Middle East and other unstable regions of the world.” —
Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA), A New Direction for America, Page 9.

3. “We will work together to lead the House of Representatives with a commitment to integrity, to civility, and to fiscal responsibility.” — Speaker-Elect Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Press Release, November 16,
2006.

4. “Breaking with many Democrats, Ms. Pelosi also spoke out against earmarking billions of dollars for home-state projects, a practice she calls a ‘monster’ that hurts Congress. ‘I’d get rid of all of them,’
she says. ‘None of them is worth the skepticism, the cynicism the public has . . . and the fiscal irresponsibility of it.’”

—“Pelosi Promises Fiscal Restraint If Democrats Win,” Wall Street Journal, July 13, 2006.

Democrats have failed in each and every one of these endeavors.  Wonderful promises are made, but Democrats fail to come through.  It is no wonder that for the first time in history, Congress has a
single digit approval rating. At 9 percent, it’s really clear just how effective the Democrats are in Congress.

From the Congress Daily:

“Nine of 12 targeted Republicans running in the most competitive Senate races this fall are either skipping the Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn., or have not decided whether to attend.”

http://www.nationaljournal.com/congressdaily/cda_20080725_6932.php

The article goes on to state that most Democratic Congressmen will be attending the Democratic Convention.

So I’d say that it’s great now-a-days to be a Republican running for re-election, with Republicans so well respected by the people who will actually be voting for them, as opposed to the business people who’ve bought and paid for them.

I support Gov Warner and his position in immigration.
I hope we got something done.
Federal failure on immigration means states must take action
Recognizing the failure of the federal government to meet its commitments in curbing illegal immigration, Gov. Warner took aggressive action:
2003: signed legislation requiring proof of legal residency before obtaining or renewing a driver’s license.
2004: approved legislation detaining illegal immigrants already convicted of felonies for 72 hours without bond until federal agents arrive.
2005: banned illegal immigrants from receiving state benefits such as Medicaid and welfare Source: Campaign website, http://www.markwarner2008.com, “Issues” Mar 9, 2008

Limit social payments to immigrants; support English
Supports the following principles relating to immigration:
Restrict the eligibility of legal immigrants for certain social programs (i.e. AFDC, HUD housing, food stamps, etc.).
Promote learning of English by immigrants.

“For how long, are you going to blame Republicans for the poor job is doing Pelosi and Reid? “

Pelosi and Reid are doing a GREAT job.  They haven’t let Bush do a stupid thing since they took charge.  The country is in their debt.

Add Godsaveus to the list of conservatives lacking a basic understanding of how our government works.  US Gov must not be a requirement for the GED.

Be honest. The first thing Pelosi did when got the seat of the Speaker of the House, was ask for a big airplane, the size of AF-1 so she can fly with all her family and friends.

You gave a 100% correct analysis of the situation in congress, jva. Micah seems to forget who was in charge before the Dems.

I didn’t bash anyone in my column about members of Congress. I merely reported on the findings of a nonpartisan organization called Congress.org. If you have gripes, take them up with Congress.org.

If Micah Lee took 12th grade Government, he should understand how much control the Democrats have in the current congress.

Democrats have enough votes to block President Lameduck from doing anything crazy.  They don’t have enough votes to pass a Republican filibuster or override a Presidential veto.  Whether you’re a democrat or a republican, its hard to move your agenda forward if you’re blocked by the other side, don’t you think?

What we have in congress is a stalemate between two sides who won’t compromise.  THAT is why they have a single digit approval rating.

Sorry Micah.  Listening to Rush Limbaugh does not substitute for passing government class.
