This is in response to the letter to the editor on August 25, regarding parking enforcement of spaces designated as reserved for persons with disabilities.
Although she writes of her difficulties in a different jurisdiction, I wanted the citizens of Prince William County to know our policy.
Under Virginia State Code 46.2-1242, the police have the authority to enforce parking in designated handicap parking spots. The code states in part:
“No person without a disability that limits or impairs his ability to walk shall park a vehicle with disabled parking license plates, organizational removable windshield placards, permanent removable
windshield placards, temporary removable windshield placards, or DV disabled parking license plates in a parking space reserved for persons with disabilities that limit or impair their ability to walk except
when transporting a disabled person in the vehicle.
A summons or parking ticket for the offense may be issued by law-enforcement officers, uniformed law-enforcement department employees, or volunteers acting pursuant to §46.2-1244 without the
necessity of a warrant’s being obtained by the owner of any private parking area.
Parking a vehicle in a space reserved for persons with disabilities in violation of this section shall be punishable by a fine of not less than $100 nor more than $500.”
These spaces and the signs that accompany them must comply with the standards and provisions as directed by the County Code of Prince William.
The Prince William County Police Department aggressively monitors all locations throughout the County for such parking violations.
CHARLIE T. DEANE
Chief of Police, Prince William County

PHDEE:
Loitering on private property is illegal.
Since you don’t seem to have a problem with men urinating, defecating, and drinking in public, we will suggest that these individuals can stand on your front lawn.
Then again PHDEE,your ANTI_AMERICAN views should agree to this action.

do the right thing: I imagine the police chief will have quite a task explaining loitering laws. The courts have consistently upheld the right to “loiter”. Sorry, your bias toward immigrants just isn’t covered as a “crime” of loitering. Freedom of assembly. Constitution. What is it you anti’s don’t understand? The law is the law. Legal is legal.

Thank you Chief Deane for explaining county policy on handicap parking.
Can you explain loitering violations to our citizens, and step up enforcement of this type of violation?
Business would pick -up for some of these convenience store owners if residents did not feel intimidated by men approaching their vehicles every time they pulled up in front of a store.
