Public safety should be county priority

On Sept. 8, four people were bound and robbed during a home invasion in Woodbridge. Can you imagine coming home and finding your family bound and gagged and your home ransacked?

On Sept. 12, the Board of County Supervisors cut the county by $1.03 million — nearly one half of that came out of law enforcement. Are the supervisors reading the same police blotter we are?  Note to
BOCS: public safety should be your number one priority, but by cutting it more than any other service, you have made it your last. Read the paper; get with the times. Fully fund law enforcement.

The Congress has the power to provide for the common defense (e.g power to establish a federal military under the direction of the President to provide for the protection of the body politic) but it doesn’t mention anything about civil law enforcement [which is a state power].

To underscore this, in Warren v. District the court noted, `fundamental principle of American law that a government and its agents are under no general duty to provide public services, such as police protection, to any individual citizen.‘

So, cite me where you believe that civilian law enforcement is a consitutional right?

And, the original question stands.  How will full funding help deter or stop home invasions?

I disagree, Public saftey is more Constitional . to provide for the common good and provide security, as well as the military ECT ECT…..that is the purpose of GOVT , not to just make laws and take our money…..

Its not a guarantee youll have a great house, Good Food , Job Ect ECT, you have a right to pursue things that you want…you also have a right to sit on your dead butt and starve if your too lazy to work.

Mike,

How does full or additional funding deter or stop home invasions?

And, public safety (I read that as local law enforcement) is not a constitutional service that a govt is required to provide.  Much case law exists about that.

I’m all for a 15% reduction in all county services.  I don’t think we’ve cut enough.

A couple things of note… Public safety is core function of government and it deserves full funding.  Also, empirical data indicates crime typically rise with an economic downturn…Which no one can dispute is the case here!

Further, home invasions violate our basic principles to be safe and secure in our homes.  I will never forget not long ago the media released an audio tape of a kid just home alone after school when someone invaded his home.  Many recall the screams he made to 911 as he fended off this person.

Needless to say, changing times call for legislation in this area that fits the crime.  As in the case just stated, this person should endure a manadatory incarceration where by the time the perpetrator is released, this young kid is collecting social security!

Moreover, our most vulnerable such as the elderly and our children are affected most from home invasions.

In addition to fully funding law enforcement, more so than ever, community neighbor and neighborhood watch is important!
