PWC police Chief Charlie T.  Deane has stated that he needs $3.1 million to install cameras in all 250 to 270 vehicles and that would protect officers against accusations of racial profiling.

Where has Chief Deane been for the last 20 years when racial profiling was on the forefront of almost every news story involving law enforcement misconduct?

Well, he was opposed to cameras in police vehicles for years. Now all of sudden, when he can create havoc with the Prince William County budget, he is all for it. I’m surprised he doesn’t need new cars and radios. He could ask for them in the illegal immigration resolution budget.

Chief Deane knows that if emergencies do not exist, you don’t ask for new equipment. New equipment is budgeted for outgoing years based on a careful assessment of need. Has Chief Deane performed a risk management matrix to support these cameras? If he has, I would love to see it.

Incredulous as it may seem, Chief Deane has the full support of Supervisor Maureen Caddigan,R-Dumfries. She says, “We will fund what the chief needs.”

Well, there you go, Chief Deane, let’s get creative and see what else you would like to buy.

Those cameras should have been requested and put in cruisers a long time ago, racial profiling has been a problem for decades and video cameras have been available since the 80’s. You are right PWC can use this money for lots of things, like providing legal citizen services strictly for legal citizens. Capeche. Chris Cummings

Deane needs the cameras because he know racial profiling is going to occur.  He’s trying to prepare a defense ahead of time. —zcx, I see you are evidently not opposed to spending taxpayers money for the cameras.  PWC could use that money for lots of things.

Chief Deane should have had those cameras installed a long time ago if he was so concerned about racial profiling as this opinion shows. Chris Cummings
