Some Draconian and Orwellian gun laws

Yesterday I read Gary Jacobsen’s article in the June 24 edition of this paper. The more I thought of it, the more disturbing the Draconian and Orwellian advocating article became. It brought back visions of 1930s news reel clips, fascists, yellow arm bands, JUDE, the confiscation of private property and the breaking of glass in the middle of the night. I’m sure this was not the intention of the liberal-minded Mr. Jacobsen.
The parallels are these: To own a firearm, one must go to the police department and obtain permission. Owners of firearms must register their possessions with the state (Orwellian). The state has the right to confiscate the property of shopkeepers. (This is not a small business-friendly law, however, the law targets only a small segment of shopkeepers for the better good of society in general. (Really scary!). I don’t know why the Aloha state just doesn’t require the firearms’ owners to place yellow stars in their windows.
History will tell us Draco’s severe laws, that also trampled on the rights of individuals, were effective. The difference is, Draco’s citizens had no constitution, hence no rights. Well, at least it is reassuring
that lawmakers in Hawaii take their ancient history seriously.

Making potential gun owners take a safety class so they do not accidentally shoot themselves or someone else? Mandating that gun owners keep firearms inaccessible to children so that grade-schoolers do not blow their own heads off? Requiring registration of a device whose inherent purpose is killing? Oh woe unto the denizens of Hawaii as they are crushed under the iron fist of Big Brother!

Oh please. You are telling the world you are indeed a desperate person when you invoke Nazis, Fascists and so forth to make your argument.
In my column I stated merely that because there are few guns in circulation in Hawaii, visitors can feel safe. That is a FACT, not an ideological argument.

Godsaveus,
You are correct. Mayor Fenty needs to focus not only on the children, but on the adults of DC, including himself. Mayor Fenty, et al, seem to believe that guns kill people and that people are only the tool used by guns to kill people. Mayor Fenty & company
must learn that that is false.
The children, and adults, of this nation need to learn that there few things worthy of the taking or giving of a life.
The mayor, & others, need to stop focusing less on taking away a tool and more on changing the mindset that causes
one, for the slightest of reasons, to use that tool, whether it be a gun, knife, jack handle, or other tool to commit a violent act.
