Supervisors should respect their elders

Why do the Supervisors feel the eastern end of the county is more worthy than those of the Western end? We are the western end, not the WEALTHY end.
I addressed the board the week the Manassas Day Senior Day Care program was closing. I told them these are tough economic times for all. We are all cutting back in various areas.
Yet, the supervisors discretionary funds were NOT cut. So, why don’t they all kick in $20,000 each and keep the center going for another year. Well, that would just simply make sense and show caring
and respect for the elderly and their caregivers.
I find the board’s action to close the Manassas program UNFORGIVABLE!! They should be ashamed of themselves.
And to those that will still have the program in Woodbridge: Watch next year, it will be you too. Although, they have had John Jenkins and Hilda Barg down there for decades promoting and supporting
seniors. This can NOT be said for the western end, and it looks like they will continue to NOT care. This is a real shame.
It’s funny how millions for immigration was “a small portion of the budget.” Yet, $160,000 can’t be found for our seniors.
I was brought up to respect my elders. Clearly, our supervisors don’t feel the same.

Mr. Charest if they are illegal brown skinned aliens then they should face the consequences of their law breaking activities. Mr. Pannell how do you know that illegals weren’t getting serviced by the program? Mr Pannell of course i believe our seniors and vets sometimes deserve assistance but when a program is rife with fraud and cost it should be examined and or closed down. As for these opinions many more people do agree with my comments about illegal aliens. LOL Chris Cummings

I know for a fact that no supervisors stepped foot in the Manassas Senior day program except for Marty Nohe in the weeks leading up to the vote. They felt they had to cut it because that is what they decided and if they had changed it because of the out cry it would just make it that much harder when they decide to cut other programs next year like the Woodbridge center etc.
You do not need to know anyone to have an “in” and get your loved one in a day program. It is open to anyone and can be covered by insurance Medicaid or a sliding scale, but there are criteria.
Chris, I am sorry that your father was not able to attend, because of his combative behavior. My mom went to a program in NJ for several months and then she developed a behavior that was so disruptive that she had to leave and be taken care of at home. She strongly believed that the van driver had the hots for her and had acted on it. After the poor guy was put on administrative leave and investigated a few times she was asked to leave. A person does well at these programs in the early stages of the disease, but they are not equipped to take care of everyone. The folks who do this work are much under appreciated. There is typically a lot of turn over. One of the great things about the Manassas day program was the caring staff who had been there for years. The Eastern center also has very dedicated employees.

The BOCS had to make a tough decision on the issue of the Senior Day Care Center. The BOCS knows all of the details on how the center was operating.

Mr. Cummings,
You don’t get it. There were NOT any immigrants in the program. So, I guess you think vets, and our seniors don’t deserve assistance? Please, tell me I’m wrong.
LOL, yep that’s what most are doing when the read YOUR comments.

ejben,
I agree with you about too much for the eastern end from Jenkins and Barg.
I will have you know I do understand that the center is not for all. My father was a combative Alzhiemers patient and was not allowed to attend. My mother and I took care of him for years at home, and hiring outside help from time to time. When it comes to a loved one. Good help is hard to find. We were very lucky to have done business with the lady we did. She actually has people available 24/7, and they were dependable. Almost, unheard of these days. I just hate to see something for one end of the county and not the other. We are PWC county with one governing board. It’s simple just wrong. imho.

The eastern end is not all wealthy. Look at Triangle and parts of Dumfries. I also personally opposed the closing of the Manassas Senior Day Care Center; I saw alot of citizens speak up at citizen’s time against its closing. The elderly(especially the poor) have never been valued in our society.

Don’t feel bad, Jenkons and Barg went overboard in putting money to the Social Services and the Eastern Center.
But that center is not for everyone who needs it.
We have many in need of services that are at home struggling to get care all on their own.
These Centers become a home for those that has an in with the ones who run them. It is not for all citizens and it is not run that way,
. Lets get real and look at the facts.

Elections have consequences. Vote for Republicans and you get the Republican agenda of cutting services for the poor, elderly, children and non-white skinned people; while our tax dolars are directed to big businesses and well-connected Republicans whom the Republican elected officials owe favors to.
In this particular case, our 6 to 2 Republican Majority of Supervisors think harrassing brown-skinned native Spanish-speaking people is more important that taking care of our elderly citizens.
This is just another case of Republicans being Republicans. Why should anyone expect differently?

Sorry that the budget for immigration enforcement has turned out to be a positive with less money having to be spent on schooling, emergency room care, and other social services as well as illegals fleeing en masse. Almost 14000 ESOL’s have departed. Maybe we can take some of that and put it towards the senior programs provided of course that no illegals get any of it. LOL Chris Cummings
