For a scouting requirement I had to choose an issue that is important to the citizens in my community. I choose to do it on the HOT/HOV lanes because traffic congestion affects everyone in our area.
I interviewed someone that works at the VDOT Mega Center at the Springfield Mall about this issue. VDOT is going to sign a contract in Dec. 2008 and they plan to start construction in 2010 on the
Interstate 95 portion of HOT/HOV lanes. They are going to build an additional HOV lane from North Arlington to Dumfries (30 miles) and build two HOV lanes from Dumfries to Massaponax/Fredericksburg (
28 miles).
I think that the construction and additions to the HOV lanes will help with traffic congestion along I-95.
I think that something needs to be done to improve traffic and that this project (HOT/HOV lanes) is a step in the right direction.
If you would like more information, you can sign up on their Web site, virginiahotlanes.com, for a project newsletter that you can receive every two weeks by e- mail or you can go to the VDOT Mega
Center at the Springfield Mall.
They will be opening up another center in Tyson’s Corner in 1 ½ years and one in Fredericksburg in 3 years.
