On July 16, the passing of Woodbridge business entrepreneur Bob Roadcap was a melancholy moment from the ‘70s and ‘80s for many who recall spending Saturday mornings in Bob’s Sport Shop at
Occoquan and Horner Roads chatting about Friday night’s high school games.
Back when Woodbridge-Garfield football was standing room only an hour before kickoff, we could always count on an interesting forum at Bob’s the next day to sip coffee and comment on the outcome.
The congenial atmosphere was a Norman Rockwell moment, reminiscent of days when folks gathered around the pot-belly stove at the country general store. Bob and Anne’s sons, Jerry and Joe, were
standout athletes at Woodbridge and while much of the talk centered on them, Bob had a genuine interest in all the kids and families of the area. He was very generous to the sports clubs. For years he
donated space where the Little League kept uniforms and equipment. He spent hours printing jerseys for the youth teams in the community.
When the big block stores came in the mid-’80s, Bob’s little store could not compete. The era passed, but our friendships lasted. I am grateful for the life-long pals that met at this simple but splendid
Saturday venue.
