In all the hoopla about immigration reform, very little has been said about addressing the major attraction for illegal immigrants — jobs!

Jobs are lacking in Mexico and most of Central America, and until the current economic downturn, have been relatively plentiful in our country. Why not include a “Marshall Plan” for education and job
creation for Mexico and most Central American nations instead of investing millions of dollars in an ineffective, counterproductive wall?

It is time for a change, and time for more novel thinking about immigration.

If we help to create jobs in Mexico that surely would solve some of the dilemma of illegal immigration as well as to preserve US jobs for legal immigrants and native citizens. LOL Chris Cummings

I just wanted to add the comment about Foreign Companies operating in the US. As I have stated previously, I work for a non-profit who assists small minority businesses with getting Government Contracts. In the last 3 years, I have gone to court with the SBA over a dozen times regarding fraudulent operations by minority owned business. I can’t recall the exact numbers but the majority of those firms were Indian owned. Of course I have to keep my mouth shut and remain professional but on more then one occasion, I have had very heated discussions with them regarding their lost chance with Federal Contracting. The US has allowed you to come here and set up a business and you turn around and abuse the very system that supported your start up operations. In one case, we got a complaint from a Federal Agency that they could never get in contact with an Indian contractor during business hours. Come to find out that the majority of the employees were in India and just had a voice mail set up in the US. They even gave the employees American names to make it sound legitimate. It makes me sick to my stomach. Most are fined and debarred from receiving federal contracts but several received prison time. Americans have no idea how the Small Business Administration caters to foreign companies.

We are in a global economy now and supporting American business and/or products is going to become more blurred over time. But we can support business where the company takes care of their own employees with full benefit packages for those working some definition of Full Time.
The thought seems to be we can buy cheaper if we are not paying for another’s benefits, but in the end, we DO subsidize those without benefits with our tax dollars being spent on health care or programs such as school breakfast programs.
And how would WE feel if our boss walked in and said he was chopping our benefit package so the company could sell more of “our” product to people that didn’t want to cover OUR vacation time or dental costs.
When you steal from someone else, you steal from yourself at the same time.

I’ll support cobra on this one as I have stated many times here it is the CONSUMER that is driving down the value of our jobs. Each time we select a foreign-made product rather than support an American industry we are stealing a bite from our brother’s mouth simply to enhance our own lifestyle. American’s vote with their wallet, and most often state $20 jeans from China are preferable to $28 jeans Made in America. We also vote to stiff the worker who has insurance and vacation benefits to shop where the worker is laid bare so we can save an additional dollar on those jeans.
And yes, it was me that started the Mexican Mustang story smile  All in fun.

Phdeebag,
what are you 15 years old as every posts start with “passing gas”. I am going to grit my teeth and agree with you that hell yeah I’m upset with the number of jobs that are going overseas as well as companies who continue to bring in foreign workers. I have stated that on many ocassions. I left Microsoft over that very issue. The so called “High Tech Workers” were not so High Tech. Most had Bachelors degrees just as the majority of workers there at Microsoft. Bill Gates, a prominent Liberal is on Capital Hill almost monthly demanding access to more foreign workers. Where is your criticism of those Corporations run by Libs who are moving jobs off shore? As far as China, I do not shop at Walmart. Do you? If so then you are part of the problem. I try and buy American every where I can. Yes it is increasingly more diffult and expensive but I feel it is worth it to support American Workers. I just purchased a brand new Mustang from Ford that costs close to $40k. There were many foreign imports that were attractive but I selected the Mustang. My other vehicle is a Chev Tahoe. I don’t buy foreign made cars. And yes the Mustang is made/assembled in the US and not Mexico as some have stated. But the bottom line is that Corporations have every right to off shore jobs. There is nothing illegal about that. But if they are benefiting from Government Contracts then that’s where I draw the line. There are many foreign based business’s who outsource jobs to the US. It is a global economy wether we like it or not. And just one other note about Big Oil. Do you have a pension plan? If so go take a look and see if that plan is invested in Oil Stocks. You may be suprised. I would expect you to pull out of that plan if you are really against Big Oil.

Cobra:  Passing gas again I see.  Look around you.  How many US jobs have left the US for other countries (take your pick which ones)? Pay or type is irrelevant - the goal of US businesses is get cheap labor and to AVOID paying of lessen taxes. These businesses aren’t interested in the US - just their bottom lines. Why the Bush admin has plans for the Canadian-US-Mexican alliance - with it’s road from Canada to Mexico. All patterned after the Europeans.  As fore the drought:  maybe Bush can bring in Halliburton or some other contractor to make it rain, i.e. a rainmaker.

Ray Williams makes a good point. Americans will have to learn Chinese if they intend to be competitive in the 21st century.

Charles,
I have to disagree with you in part as most Mexicans do have a job back home. Unfortunately those jobs pay far less then what they can make in the US. But I certainly agree with the remainder of your post. Take away the jobs and they will not come. Also birth right citizenship must be changed. That is their trump card when faced with deportation. The only number that I want to concentrate on is the number 400 million. That is the estimated population of the US by 2042 and the majority is due to immigration both legal and illegal. Funny how I never see the Al Gore band wagon talking about that. How can we sustain the quality of life that we are accustomed to? The majority of the US already suffers from drought conditions. I’m glad that I will most likely be gone by that year. What a sad state of affairs.

The US is a sovereign country.  We have the right as such to enjoy our international borders.  Regardless of the incentive(s) that drive people from other countries to violate our sovereignty, it is not acceptable behavior.  It is not our responsibility to solve other peoples’ problems.  We have problems in the US that would warrant our attention (i.e. our tax dollars) BEFORE addressing others’.  Once we solve all of our problems, then we can consider solving others’ problems.

This doesn’t mean we should refrain from spending our tax money outside the US.  There are very valid reasons that are in our national interest to warrant spending our tax dollars overseas.

If we want to stop people from entering our country illegally, we can compare 2 approaches.

One would be to not have a wall (cost avoidance), be very lax on internal enforcement (cheaper), and spend our money building jobs for Mexicans, in Mexico (big expense).

Or, we could put up a wall (expense), optimize our border patrol (expense), and optimize our internal enforcement (expense).

Now choose.

As you ponder your decision, consider the fact that illegal aliens originate from other countries other than Mexico.  So, if we focus on just Mexioc, we’ll still have illegal aliens from all the others.  Second, assume we are able to create enough jobs in Mexico for every potential illegal alien.  You then have to ask yourself, whether those jobs will be sufficient to dissuade potential illegal aliens from choosing to enter our country illegally anyway.  Then, if you assume that all the jobs we created in Mexico and everywhere else where illegal aliens orginate, are sufficient, you have another question to ask.  Are there any illegal aliens who enter our country illegally with incentives other than jobs?  Maybe they like our climate better.  Maybe they want a better quality of life.  Maybe they just like hamburgers better than burritos.  Whatever the reason, if it is not the job, then creating jobs wouldn’t address their incentives.  So, we would have spend all this money providing jobs for illegal aliens in their country of origin only to have them violate our soveriegnty anyway.

Now, if you simply control our borders, you can keep out illegal aliens, regardless of their incentive to enter our country illegally.  Also, such a strategy does not focus on only one, or a few, countries of origin.  Illegal aliens from Mexico, Nicaragua, Ireland, or Waziristan would be kept out.

Which sounds better?

If we create jobs in Mexico, how would we fund China’s takeover of America?

Soon our children will be taking language classes in Chinese in order to communicate with their bosses.
