I found it appalling that one day the county had closed off Smoketown Road to entering traffic so it could repave a very small section of Smoketown. You could exit Smoketown but in order to reenter you had to go all the way back to Old Bridge Road and come in the back way.

This should not be allowed.

Oh sure they are going to say that but traffic was not allowed to enter on Smoketown road because I tried twice and both times had to go back to Old Bridge to reenter and yes I do live in the area and totally agree that people that cut through to get to Old Bridge should go the other way.

I checked on this situation with VDOT.  The Manassas manager checked with the crew in question.  They were patching a large pothole.  Traffic was routed around the work into the other lane.  Flagmen alternated traffic in both directions.  If you had waited, you have been let through.  Maintenance supervisors drove through the maintenance area in question 3 times to see how traffic was flowing.

I’m curious what exactly appalled you.  Is it the fact that VDOT is patching potholes?  Is is that traffic was alternated past the maintanance area?

What exactly do you advocate being forbidden?

Traffic on NoVA highways and streets is a recurring quality of life issue for us all to be sure.  An alternative might be to require all road maintenance be performed in the overnight hours to minimize its impact.  For lane closures on I-95 in the mixing bowl this seems prudent, but for patching a pothole on an overused cut-through neighborhood street I have little sympathy.  If you live in the Smoketown cut-through area, I understand.  If you were cutting through, then maybe you should consider YOUR impact on the people in this neightborhood and go around anyway.
