Typical Jacobsen spin on Congress

Gary Jacobsen is at it again. The spin he puts in his articles just get better.
In his article — “The Ten least effective members of Congress,” he left out one important evaluation factor and glossed over another. He left out the “Sizzle/Fizzle“ factor. Sizzle includes a legislator’s
unique background, relationships or newfound popularity that somehow adds weight to their power that is not scored in the other ranking categories. Fizzle indicates a loss of power despite their position
that impairs the member’s ability to be effective. The gloss is in the “Position” rating.
The “Position” rating automatically adds scoring weight to the majority party’s chairperson positions — not the effectiveness of the respective committee, just that he/she sits as the chairperson. So right
there the majority party regardless of committee effectiveness, productivity, etc., is given rating points.
His statement that — “Interestingly, the ten most effective (i.e., most powerful) members of Congress (five in the Senate and five in the House) are all Democrats” should be considered in view of
accomplishments — not points based on such ratings like the Sizzle/Fizzle factor or keeping a chairperson’s chair warm. Is not Congress’ approval rating somewhere around 18-19 percent?
Was not the 2006 Democratic Party victory theme — we have a mandate and get ready for the changes. Where is all this leadership, most powerful to get things accomplished, etc? Their sizzle fizzled.
Oh, by the way, Democratic Representative Rangel is number three in the House rankings. It appears he has been “soliciting donations from corporations with business interests before his panel, hoping
to raise $30 million dollars for a new academic center that will house his papers when he retires” (Washington Post, July 15). That should move him up to at least number two on the list.

Rangle being # 3 is a sad fact indeed that we can do no better than this?
Jacobson is just as bad. With people like this we will never get this Country on the right track.
There has got to be some caring, intelligent people outthere that wants to serve our Country. Where are they?

If you don’t like the rankings, take it up with Congress.org, not with me. In this case, I was merely a “reporter.”

Cobra,
On July 20, you asked “Who is Larry Remener and does anyone care?”
I don’t know if anyone cares, but I will be happy to tell you who I am.
Unlike you, I do not hide behind a
pseudonym. When I write, I identify
myself. Unlike you, I back up my
statements with facts.
To answer your question, I am a
retired Army officer who had three
assignments in Special Forces and two
tours in Vietnam. In 1967, I commanded
U.S. Army Special Forces Detachment
A-343 patrolling the Vietam/Cambodian
border. They were 12 of the finest
men I have ever known, and I quickly
learned to separate real men from loud-
mouthed wimps who don’t have the guts
to identify themselves.
After Vietnam, I was detailed to
the CIA where I wrote National Intelligence Estimates for the National
Intelligence Council.
Hopefully that answers your question. Now lets see if you have the
guts to answer mine. Who is “Cobra”?

I stopped taking anything that Gary Jacobsen writes seriously; it is always useless spin that is grossly incorrect. I will read it if I want to get a good laugh and to see how wrong a person can be on most subjects.

If I remember the original article, Gary Jacobsen wasn’t ranking members of congress at all. He got the rankings from some other source and was just commenting on them.
I think Joe Angsten’s reading comprehension has fizzled.
The Democratic Congress has done a great job. They don’t have the numbers yet to get much done (that should change on Nov. 4), but they’ve totally prevented Bush from doing any further damage to our country for the past two years. We are completely in their debt. Great job!
